Did you know that the shoes were supposed to be silver, but since Television had just come out in color, the red was more catchy, but it messed up the symbolism.

Ashlee

What would be the symbolism of silver shoes?

iridiscente

The whole thing was an allegory of using paper bills over gold or silver. The gold was the brick road, she wore silver shoes and it lead them to the "emerald city" or the symbolism for money.

There's a better explanation here:

*giggles* That's exactly what I did when I found it. So I thought I'd try to make you all just sit and stare at your screens like little zombies. I guess it worked. *cheeky grin*
