Apparently.  Must use ice.  lol

One random tangential comment regarding roads in the north or south.....  When I was down south, I always thought it bizarre and unique that the gravel used in a lot of the asphalt is brownish colored....so a worn strip of pavement has a brownish color to it....whereas up here, it's white/gray gravel, and worn pavement is white/gray...

Let me explain a bit for those in the southern areas!

1.)  Look at the map and see Minnesota is!

2.)  Look at the weather map between December 15 and March 15

3.)  Plot how many days per year we see SUB ZERO weather!  Yes that is below -0- Fahrenheit!  During the aforementioned 90 span of time, it is not uncommon to have anywhere from 21 to 41 days of below zero weather.  In Mid January we often will go 2 to 3 weeks in a row without ever getting above -0-.

4.)  Did I mention SNOW?!?   While we do not get the heavy lake affect snow like Michigan and some parts of Ontario, Ohio and New York, we do get snow and ice... oh boy do we get the ice.  We get a special brand called Black Ice (no Seth, that is not a gangsta rapper!)

When the weather gets below zero the road crews spray deicer on the roads along with salt and sand.

Zoom forward to the Summer when the temps rise to 100 degrees.... the roads have gone from -40 to +100 in less than 6 months, 140 degree temperature change.. we get collapsing roads, concrete blow outs and bridges losing chunks of cement.

Oh?  Do they regularly see 140 degree temp swings?

Nope.. same stuff...  Concrete and Asphalt!

The difference is the weather swings that we see - Meteorologists beg to move here so that they can be around such active weather patterns.  We get it all.....  Snow, Ice, subzero, hot, humid, muggy, rain, sleet, hail, tornados and everything in between. We haven't figured out how to get hurricanes or tsunami's but I am sure they are working on it.

 Good points Scott... Unless you've lived up north... It would be hard to understand. I've been in Texas when they got a little tiny bit of snow / ice... They shut down entire towns! Which is good for survival... Cause them Southerners are scary drivers on regular roads without white snow or black ice!! LOL

I grew up in PA, and black ice and freezing rain was a regular occurrence... 4 wheel drive on ice doesn't do you any good, in fact, it is worse!

So yes, some of worse roads are up north... Scott pointed out why... Lol

Hey Scott, they started using some kind of melt here a few years ago that was made partially from beet juice.  It works great from what I can tell.  Have you heard of it or do they use it up there too?

Never heard of it. They are still using the spray and sand / salt mix
