What exactly is a "Date"? What defines it?

So what defines a "real date" exactly?

The guy asks a girl to go somewhere with him, and he pays for everything.

The girl asks the guy to take her somewhere and makes him pay for it all.

A guy gets his friend to ask a girl to meet them at a conference, and go out to eat afterward.

how does what a person defines as a date, and the dreaded dating rules... reflect what will happen later after they the people going on a date are married?

I'll take a (rare) swing at a serous reply, here.

A 'date" should be some occasion where two people who are exploring the potential for a relationship of more than just friendship get together and do one or more activitioes together, with at least part of the purpose being exploring how much potential there is for a bond of more than just friendship.

If married, the two can then still 'date' with the purpose of keeping that 'more than friendndship' bond alive, well, and growing.

When and if someone had the need for a date... and neither party is comfortable with just a one on one date, is it better to take along a married couple, or just another couple who is dating?

Is there an advantage to one over the other?

If going with another non-married couple... what about taking along a 5th person... ? Is there an advantage?

Just a (semi-serious) thought..if it's am ore comfortable setting desired, how about a non-dating couple? It seems like that would make it more a 'hanging out together' kind of time.

Inviting a married couple to go along can be, well, highly annoying. *lol* Especially when they want to use the outing as "freedom from the kids" and try to make out with each other every few minutes. (Never mind how or why I know this. *cough*)

Yoop? Really? A fifth person? Just how many people are you wanting to take on said date? :eyebrow: Unless you're doing a group outing (not really a date) and going to the zoo or the fair or something...  please leave all extraneous peoples home.  :lol:

If we're talking a date between two fairly young singles, I understand where a chaperone might be good (umm... especially when it's specifically requested by, say, the gal's parents). But sometimes there are alternatives to the obvious, depending on where you're going, and the specific family we're talking about. For example, sometimes siblings or grandmas make great chaperones. They're usually far easier to get along with than parents. *cough cough* :P

I like Sir John's idea.

And I also like the idea of double-dating with another dating couple - but it's much nicer when both couples are (mostly) on the same page spiritually and have similar view regarding touchy-feely stuff. Encouragement (IE getting pushed or urged) to do things you're really not okay with is NOT fun. And a date that isn't fun isn't a fun date. :updown:

Agreed! :)

This couple going out by themselves is not an option. Both come from very conservative families / churches. So there must be more people involved, both parties are ok with that, and actually like the idea of it.

The question is how... bowling has been discussed, as well as dinner. Apparently one of two doesn't do well with talking in large group settings (lol)... and so a smaller group is needed, especially when the time spent together is supposed to be a "date."

One of them (the guy) is still attempting to figure out why going on a date is supposed to be so much better than just chillin with friends. This couple does spend time talking on the phone, and hang out with each others respective families... and the guy is not apt to discuss super serious things regarding their new friendship / relationship (still trying to figure out how to define what they are...) in front of other people... LOL.
