to me....
a road has hills, is long, has curves.
a street is busy, has sidewalks, and lots of redlights.
lanes are more neighborhoodish streets that are less busy, and go into subdivisions.
avenues are corridors to streets, and have more stopsigns than traffic lights.

not too sure how long a short pier
is, but a short pier is even shorter than usual when I am diving off of it into the lake!
