Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events.  Small minds discuss people.

Hugs the Alamo. I shall remember it now that I've seen it. Wish I wouldn't have touched the cactus, though.

*Hugs* Sis and wonders if she was as surprised at the location and size of the Alamo as I was.   :biglaugh:

Hugs Sister Mom and Newsman. I had always heard there wasn't much left of the mission, so I wasn't surprised. But I was surprised the grounds were bigger than I thought. I was really surprised when a cactus bit me. I saw the big spines, so I touched it between them but it also had tiny ones. Got one in my finger that I couldn't get out. Wish I had some gum at the time. LOL

Newsman, been to those places, too. Went to Kennedy's tomb. It was strangely quiet with so many people around.

Standing on the field at Gettusburg was also beyond neat..I walked out onto the battlefield before sunset and looked up at the area the Confederates saw as they charged into the area known as the 'high water mark' of the Confederacy.. quite memorable.

Probably the one place of the limited number I've seen that surpassed the Alamo inner room(s) for solemness would have been at Arlington, particularly at the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

When you mentioned this, it reminded me of some pics I found when I was at Dad's over Christmas.  Here they are:

Those might be good, but those are OLD!  He needs to come to San Francisco and visit Alcatraz now!

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on a snowy day in January  2003

This is awesome. Did you watch the changing of the guard? The whole Arlington experience is rather somber and humbling. It has a tendency to open eyes to the real reasons we have what we have in this country.

RainbowJingles

Yes, we did.  John and Deb (luvs2travel) and I were there for the whole thing.  It was freezing, but it was well worth it.  I used to live near DC, and my family would go almost every summer, and even when I was younger, I remember being fascinated by the somber feeling that the ceremony invoked.

Did you know:
The remains of the Vietnam Unknown were exhumed May 14, 1998. Based on mitochondrial DNA testing, DoD scientists identified the remains as those of Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Joseph Blassie, who was shot down near An Loc, Vietnam, in 1972. It has been decided that the crypt that contained the remains of the Vietnam Unknown will remain vacant.

Hebrews 12:12-16 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you
