Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry. A single haiku consists of 3 lines of 5-7-5 syllables. There are no rhyming requirements. They are usually about nature, but as you can read, we write them about everything. :teeth: haha

However, Lady Krissa, Brannon _has_ been known to get a little pointed when people try to freestyle away from the 5-7-5 format too much!

rofl! True, I don't write them any other way, and I do prefer them that way. :teeth: I will, however, give kudos to other forms of "haiku" that I like. I'm pretty sure there are examples of that in this thread.

Why is your haiku

Syllable by syllable

Get counted each time

:laughhard:

B

*shrugs* As far as I can tell, it's the traditional form used by the Japanese. I like sticking to it. Which is kind of interesting, because most of my other poetry is free verse. I dunno why I'm a stickler when it comes to haiku. haha! I guess 'cause I feel like freestyling it too much declassifies it as haiku.

"A haiku can be anywhere from a few to 17 syllables, rarely more. It is now known that about 12- not 17- syllables in English are equivalent in length to the 17 onji (sound-symbols) of the Japanese haiku." -Cor van den Heuvel in the forward to the 3rd edition of The Haiku Anthology.
