Observations/questions so far:
Five-oh has a sweet truck. I am now insanely jealous...lol
Arkansas: the 55mph state. Unless you are on the interstate. Then its 56 MPH.
What in Gods earth is a hootie loop?
All my moms kinsfolk are from Conway/Russellville. A small fact she failed to mention. BAH!
Roscoe, Lou and Chey.are good people.
I have ADHDAZERudnfis....
Cheyenne is a for evermore daddy's girl.
Observations from the other side of the meet-up
1) mini is everybit as ugly as I feared.
2) Mini, like myself, married way above his class and threw a couple of good lookin' colts
3) Mini's camera shows way to many of rusty's faults, and adds way too many pounds to me.
4) A "hootie loop" is a road that is designed to make outlanders wonder what we were thinking when we named our roads. It worked.
5) Mini is an Arkansan by blood. This fact has taken me to depths of despair that I didn't know existed. In Arkansas, that makes us nearly kin.
6) I have decided that, while Mini may be part communist- ( hates lasagna. And chocolate gravy)- I will accept him as a brother. Mainly because he is bigger than me and could use me as an armrest, or something equally unpleasant should he so wish.
7) Any and all pics that Mini might post should be veiwed with the knowledge that they are, near certainly, photoshopped and fake.
8) I had a great time tonight- and tomorrow is going to be better.....CAR SHOW!!!
Had a great time meeting Mini and his wife.... chelle. Looking forward to consignment shops, yards sales, thrift shops- anything else we find interesting tomorrow.....

I will load a few more of the ones I have tomorrow though, and will probably spoil Mini's perfect storytelling in order by picture post. :laughhard:

It was an honor to meet five-o_s better half!
BTW...it was also an honor to meet five-oh as well. Also, can't leave out their little princess...such a sweetheart!
I figured I'd sneak a couple more photos in here before Mini does....
Not long after meeting, Cheyenne and Brenden? (can't remember if it's "Brenden" or "Brennen", I'm ashamed to admit) discover that they have something in common- they both believe they're part monkey:
Shortly thereafter, we decided that it would be appropriate to take a pic of Mini next to the Miata...
There are other pics of the Miata being "put on like a suit" by a certain rather large gorilla, but I'll let said gorilla post them.... :laughhard:
There will be several other photos, so these are not posted in the order that they may have happened. Saturday morning, after breakfast, Mini and I ditched the wives and kiddos and headed to the mountain. I stopped and showed him the overlook, and snapped a pic of " Mini the Mountain Goat" while he was moving for a better vantage point.
I have purposfully left pics of the girls out so that Mini can insert them as needed and tell the story- this IS his thread after all. :laughhard:
After leaving the overlook, we went to the car show, where, among other things, Mini proved he COULD fit into a Karmann Ghia- something I had my doubts of:
And yes, he could actually close the door. 'course, breathing after the door was closed might have been a chore. :laughhard:
After wandering around the car show and Mini taking tons of pics, we reluctantly left the the swap meet area and began to tool around the mountain. At some point I got the wise idear that Mini needed to see Cedar Falls and the Rock House Cave. It had been more than a few years since I had walked that trail, and I recalled it being rather short and level, a easy walk. Apparently in the past 15 years or so, without my knowledge, we had an earthquake that relocated the trail, making it longer and very steep. This only became apparent AFTER we had walked down it. I got a snapshot of Bigfoot in his under ground liar:
and began the walk to the falls. We quickly decided that there was an easier way, and abandonded the hike in favor of a pleasant drive around to the other side of the falls. :biglaugh:
I soon discovered that I pant like a bulldog when it's hot weather and I'm having to climb. After I told him to watch his step, Mini made a statement questioning my concerns if he fell and broke a leg, something along the lines of wondering if I would carry him out. I explained that I would call 911 and take pictures to be posted here- no need in both of us being hurt. :laughhard:
Rusty never looked so good as he did when we crawled off of that trail and that red cooler that can be seen in his bed in the pics Mini has already posted contained the nectar of the gods...... cold Dr. Pepper! We survived...
After our wandering around the mountain, we retreated to Bro Papa's and enjoyed some BBQ, and cold Mexican Coca-Cola (made with cane sugar, much better than normal coca cola) but forgot to take pics- both of us! Bro Papa had to leave, so we said goodbye and I began showing Mini the route Chey and I take nearly weekly.
we stopped by the circa 1890's store down the road from my house and heard the old ladiesof the community talking about having come from a birthday party for a 107 year old lady- the woman talking about it was every bit of 90 herself :o
Mini bought some ice cream for us to enjoy:
Mini took some pics and enjoyed a spell driving Rusty as can be seen in an earlier post. He took every opportunity to spin Rusty's tires, too. :biglaugh:
All too soon for me, evening came and we met up with the girls and kiddos so Mini and Chellebelle could leave Mini's ancestral homeland and he could return to Oklahoma. I'll leave the many other pics and stories out until Mini gets his side and pics posted, but I will say that all in all, this weekend was one of the most enjoyable I've had in years. I personally think this needs to be a yearly event...... :freaky2:

:pound: It's an optical illusion- the angle of the shot....
Ok...now that I finally have a moment to place my account of the story out in the open, here goes.
Five-oh had invited me to go to the car show several times, and it finally looked like I was gonna have a chance to go. Then it seemed like everything was working in a way that we would be unable to attend. Then it looked back on...I'm sure by this time I was driving poor Five-oh crazy.
Original plan was for me to go over Thursday, then head back home Friday. Then Chelleebelle worked it out to be off those days, so we were just gonna make it a weekend with the family. Then a lady in our church passed away Wednesday morning, so we had to help take care of the church all day Thursday for the funeral Friday morning. Finally, we were able to leave about noon and head toward Arkansas.
As you can tell, my kiddos enjoyed the trip....
Let me make a point here...in Oklahoma, all paved roads are 65mph. As soon as we hit Arkansas...55MPH. I was not expecting that! LOL But driving through the small towns was a blast. Had a great time.
After a couple hours driving HWY 64 out of Checotah all the way to Ozark Arkansas, we stopped at Rivertowne BBQ (http://rivertownebbq.com/). We have ate there before, and were looking forward to some good BBQ. I kid you not, Rivertowne BBQ is located between two biker bars. LOL But man, it has some forEVERmore good BBQ. And...it was closed till 4 pm. I nearly cried.
Right to the left of Rivertowne is this old jail cell/law office. I guess if you have a law office downstairs, and the inmates upstairs, it saves on the bills...
After rolling into the Morrilton area, Five-oh told us where to meet him and we headed his way. I wish I had got a picture of Rusty right then. There is something cool about seeing a nearly 70 year old truck rolling down the road to meet you. After a few introductions (and my first ride in Rusty) we headed to Five-ohs house to wait on LouLou.
Brennen took to Domino (the dog) and they had a blast.
Then it was time to see the WORLD FAMOUS MIATA!
Thats one SHORT car. LOL
It fits its owner well....*cough*
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y256/minnesota68/Petit%20Jean/DSC00020.jpg)
That bump above my head is my head hitting the top. LOL
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y256/minnesota68/Petit%20Jean/DSC00025.jpg)
Notice my bald head sticking out and Brennen in the background looking at me like I was crazy...LOL
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y256/minnesota68/Petit%20Jean/DSC00026.jpg)
Then we found out Five-oh DOES have a thing for pink cars...ROFLOL
So after we get Five-oh prayed through, and the girls decide its time to eat, we get ready to load up in the truck...and...wha?!?
The girls are taking Rusty!
We put up a serious argument when suddenly LouLou pulls out something...at first we thought she was pulling a gun on us, but it was worse. It was Five-Oh's wallet.

So Saturday morning rolls around, and we meet up with Roscoe and LouLou for a bite to eat. And what does Roscoe order?
Then he heaps a helping of butter right on top of the chocolate...
Now, I know it may be pratically unarkansasasy of me, but chocolate gravy?!? Chelleebelle ordered it too...I mean, I eat strange stuff. Sardines. Squid. Octopus. Goat. But I draw a line at two things. Lasagna and Chocolate Gravy. But I digress...LOL
More later...been editing a photo of Rusty that I will post tomorrow.
BLASPHEMY! Chocolate gravy is not weird! You'd best not come up to Tennessee with heretical talk like that. They serve it in restaurants up here, and they sell a lot of it.
Who knew Roscoe was a Railroad Engineer on the side....
And why didn't he order donuts!?!
Good chocolate gravy pwns donuts any day of the year.
:smugno:
That's just wrong. :P
I like sweets as much as the average person but chocolate gravy? :loopy: That looks a little nauseating. I'm baffled that anyone would choose that over bacon or sausage gravy. In fact, I'm hungry for real gravy just talking about it. LOL :fork:

MY, Real chocolate gravy with a gob of fresh butter melted in it takes a TRUE southerner to levels of heaven previously unknown to exist. Ain't nothing like it. :laughhard: Of course good sausage gravy is hard to beat, but pales in comparision to chocolate gravy....

And Cheesie, the railroad stripe overalls is my usual "uniform" for swap meet crawling and driving Rusty. That may change since my father's day gift was a NEW pair of Big Smith overalls in blue. :thumbsup2: And to answer your last question- the owner of the diner we ate at doesn't sell donuts. I don't know why, he's a former cop and knows how important donuts are to us.
But- if mini posts it, you'll see that after we got to the swap meet, someone tried to bait me..... kinda like you and your traps.... :biglaugh:
Ill be loading some more as the day goes on.
Roscoe, remember the one that I said I would make a panoramic view of? Its so big that I am having trouble loading it online...LOL
Ill have a link that I need to add here at some point. Took large # of photos, and stitched it into a panoramic view of the valley below Petit Jean state park. Its something like 25mb, and it has a rare photo of a leprechaun in it.
Ok, I finally got the picture uploaded. Had to shrink it down quite a bit, but you get the idea of what it looked like.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y256/minnesota68/Petit%20Jean/DSC00040Stitch-Copy.jpg
At this point, I heard one of the funniest quotes of the day. I had just got done taking the photos right on the edge of Petit Jean (hundreds of feet drop below) when a little girl comes right out to the edge. Her mother is standing back on top, well away from the edge, and yells something to the effect "If you fall off there and get killed, I will KILL you!" Me and Roscoe laughed about that for a good while. Then as we were leaving, the woman drove by and said to us "I didn't have to kill her!" Somewhere along the line, I made the comment to Roscoe I wonder where she is from, to which he replied, she sounded like a southern mom. As she left, I noticed she had Arkansas plates on her car...LOL
As we were leaving the top of Petit Jean, I took my favorite shot of Rusty.
I knew this was ripe for a little editing, and learned last night how to get the desired outcome.
Heres one of Rusty sitting in front of a abandoned hotel that use to operate on the top of Petit Jean:

Ok, so now we get to the swap meet. Let me tell you, its a overload. I will post some pictures, and let Roscoe explain what they are if he feels like it.

It took everything in me to keep him from spending all his money at that one spot. LOL
Just so you can get a idea of the vastness of this thing, heres a couple photos:

glad you got your photo shopped like you were questioning me on. :)
and out of the mouth of one of the monkeys mentioned earlier...he was enamored with the other monkey :)
lol
First of all let, me address the "leprachaun" comment- :pound: :pound: I thought I'd stayed outta your camera's veiwfinder at that spot.
And, as for the cars- we'll take it from the top, if anyone cares:
1) is a "brass era" Ford Model T Runabout. I *think * it is a 1915 model. The owner told me that he had dragged it out of a barn where it had been parked since the late 60's, and was unrestored. He was asking $16k for it.....if I were a rich man, this probably would've come home with me.
2) Mini's Specialty, a Cj5 Jeep. We agreed it was a thrashed but usable $2500 beater.
3)One of my dream cars, a '67 Corvette convertible. Price? If you have to ask.....
4) 1965- I think- Ford Galaxey convertible. Definately a project, but one that would make a killer cruiser for a family. I'm thinking silver or black, black guts and top, 18" Torquethrust style wheels, a slight lowering job and a newer model Fuel injected 5.0/ six speed. Won't cost more than $50-60k tops. :laughhard:
5) '37 ford. Asking price- $$$$$$ Absolutely gorgeous interior
6) The Karmaan Ghia that Mini shoehorned himself into. We came to the conclusion that while he was definatly in it, there was no way he could operate it. :laughhard:
7) A run of the mill old Plymouth Valiant, also sold as a Dodge Dart. Probably powered by a slant six, about as low on the collectability scale as you can go, but can be made cool...
8) Bait. That's all I'm gonna say.
9) @ 10)- Self explainitory
11) '65- I think- Covair Rampside truck. GM's answer to a question no one asked. Ugly as sin. Somewhat collectible- they're like a trainwreck, you can't help but look at the ugly son....
And I love the pic Mini took of Rusty on the mountain. Think I'm gonna see if I can get a poster made like that. :thumbsup2:

To pick back up on our story, I will post pictures from the actual car show now...again, roscoe will have to help narrate the photos...
Just a idea of how vast this thing is, heres a few random shots.

More later...
I think you did a pretty good job narrating these pics. Not sure theres much I could add-
The red ambulance you see in the background of the second picture has been a local car its whole life. I can remember seeing it when I was Brennen's age and begging the driver to sound its siren for me. :biglaugh:
4) The fourth pic is a '54 chevy truck. It'd be the perfect around town and to the hardware store truck. I wish rusty was that pretty.
5)The gold Trans-Am makes me want to pretend to be Burt Reynolds and tear off through small towns for three states. :biglaugh:
6) & 7) Of the two objects of lust for me shown here- I'd perfer the second. It's a '57 with single, not double headlights and a manual tranny. The hard top is iceing on the cake.
8) Pre-73 'vette. Not uncommon, but very desirable for me.
9) It's a Cord. This means it's worth six figures. Guarenteed. So yeah- expensive taste.
10) If my VW had been this pretty, I'd still have it.
11) Rolls royce. See comment #9
12) 1932 Packard. One of my dream cars. I'd drive the wheels off of it. Also probably a very high five figure to mid six figure car.
13)This old Willys has been used by Museum staff for years to get around the swap meet. One of those things that has been around so long, regular attendees like me don't even notice it. Mini spotted it from across the show field and headed for it like a bee to honey. :biglaugh:
Totally enjoying this thread. I don't know much about cars, but they look cool! Looks like you guys had a great time.
I meant to include these photos earlier. This is a RARE car to me, but not nearly as rare as the one that I will include in a little while.

Ok, now we move inside the museum. Cars, cars and MORE cars!
Again, I will default to Roscoe to narrate. Some of these I have pictures of the placard that was displayed about the car. I will include the link to the full size picture so you can read it.

I didnt get pictures of half the cars in the Museum. Each one was beautiful. I will have to spend days up there next year, taking hundreds of photos. Wow, its impressive.
Ok, so after the museum, we decide to go sight seeing. Keep in mind the parking lot is like a car show all in itself. As we were walking back to Rusty, I let out a scream that sounded alot like a little girl, and flat foot it by Roscoe like I had a snake chasing me. He expecting the worse things imaginable, something like 1) there was a real snake, or 2) a major donut shortage just hit the land, took off tearing after me sobbing hysterically.
I failed to mention to Roscoe when I started screaming that I saw my dream truck. You John Deere (Johnboy) and MM (sarba ann) lovers just read and weep...
All kidding aside, I have only saw 2 or 3 photos in my life of these, and never one in person. A few "rat-rodders" will take a Farmall tractor front grill and put it on their car. This guy made a "truckster," very high quality build. I was VERY impressed.
I tried to get a good shot of the interior, but couldn't. You can see that it is very neat, very well put together.
As we were leaving, I got this picture of a old Studebaker. At least I think its what it was.
Now what fascinated me about this truck is the paint. The way I understand it, the guy made a custom street rod out of this old truck, but left the old faded paint on it. Instead of putting a shiny new paint job on it, he clear coated over the old worn out paint and in all reality just sealed it the way it was. Coolest idea EVER. And very very impressive truck. The ride, the stance, the rims, the diamond plate in the bed and the custom rear lights and plate (mind went blank, cant think what its called where the brake lights are called...HELP ROSCOE!) they are in all just wow me. To me, it really speaks volumes about the truck.
Next we get to exploring...
Lots of those cars were enough to make me drool...... None however, can make me drool like that Red 57 Chevy. I have dreamed about owning one of those since I was a lil boy. I came close to getting an old rusty one till the guy who owned it backed out. The one in that picture looks exactly like the one I have always dreamed of owning. So, if anyone is wondering what you could get me for Christmas or my next birthday see below.
:laughhard:
DITTO THAT!! ^^^^
I have a red and white 57 chevy convertible diecast model car that sat on my dresser for most of my life. It's currently in the closet, but I may dig it out after these pictures.
Wished I would have known, Jason, I would have shown you while you were here.
Just a few comments.
Chocolate gravy?? Never heard such. Sounds interesting. Really yucky if it's made like regular gravy with some chocolate thrown in. But if it's just basically a chocolate sauce or syrup, could be good. But I prefer country ham biscuits or plain biscuits.
Lasagna is awesome!
That first red Corvette? Love! '50s Corvettes are some of my favorite cars.
Old cars can be neat....but if it was a tractor show I'd have been far more interested and impressed. :P
Old cars take lots of money to keep up.

What doesn't take lots of money to keep up? Could you tell me, please?
Maybe a rock. That MIGHT not take a whole lot of maintenance. But even that would require cleaning periodically unless you want it to have the dirt it accumulates on it.

Hence the reason men take lots of money to keep up. It's their "toys" that are expensive. LOL

So do older ladies, but *some men* ( Bro Clarence) appreciate and love them enough to do it. :hypocrite: :laughhard: Now, I know she'll be making a trip to Arkansas. I REALLY,REALLY, love you, PF. :laughhard: :couch:
And my bit of commentary on the last set of pics mini's posted....
1) is what Chey refers to as "Rusty's big brother". It is a 2 owner 1941 Chevy pickup that was bought just prior to Pearl Harbour, and spent several years in storage before its owner returned from the war. Part of me wants Rusty to look like this, part of me knows that if he did, I wouldn't have near as much fun driving him.
2) The vehicle everyone thinks of when the words "classic Car" is mentioned. A '57 Chevy convertible. A car so popular now there is a company making reproduction bodies. If you were rich, you could actually buy a brand new one. And for a bit fo trivia- ford actually outsold Chevrolet in 1957. Anybody know what a '57 Ford looks like? Didn't think so.... not near as popular now.
3) 1937 Packard. This was, I believe, the "Town Car" model and was usually chauffer driven. This particular example was purchased from a neighbour of '30's and '40's Movie star Mae West, and is believed to have actually been her car when new.
4)A car that Lincoln "donated" for JFK to use. He was so enamored of it, on at least one occasion, he "lost" his Secret Service protection and enjoyed a solo cruise. I bet that security leader was having a stroke......
5)A '65- I believe- Ranchero that Elvis bought new and used on one of his dude farms, for when he wanted to be a normal guy. Pretty sweet little car...
6) One of only Two Climber cars known to exist. I think there were approximately 200 ish made, and were built in North Little Rock, Arkansas between 1919 and 1923- I think. One of the road test/publicity stunts they used the car for was driving for 100k miles on Arkansas' muddy roads and then climbed the steps of the Capitol, where the Governor switched the engine off. I've tried to get the current Capitol Historian to allow me to get with Musuem staff and recreate this, but he's not fond of the idea.. :laughhard:
7) This car was bought by a man in Fort Smith from a lady taking it to the World's Fair in 1939. Imagine driving this from Arkansas to Chicago....
8) Mercedes SLK500- I think. Around a late twenties early thirties model, I don't remember. Probably a $150k car
9) 1932- I think, too many cars) Auburn. One more on my "If I had Bill Gates' money" list. Probably $100-$200k car depending on the venue.
The Morgan Areo Mini posted is a handmade limited edition car, and cost around 110,000 pounds new. Somebody else do the conversion- I suspect it' be north of $15k. It has a top speed of around 170mph...
And Mini's beloved "truckster" was built around a 1946 Chevy pickup cab. Looks a bit different than Rusty, no? This is probably the first tractor grilled rod I've ever liked. Typically they're thrown together pieces of junk, but not this one- it WAS sweet.
And lastly- Mini's "patin'ed paint" Studebaker with the diamond plate bed, and rear valance- it was a '46 model, and had a 454 Chevy big block hiding under the hood. I didn't care for the wheels, but all in all- a sweet driver.

my only issue with this "truck" is there is no RED on this FARMALL truck. Hello???? John Deere's are green... Farmall's are red and on occasion, white, black, and the lovely shade of rust...but never green! Yes...i do believe he was color blind. (grin)
Thats not John Deere Green...its more of a neon green.

Nah, we have plenty of hickory logs. ;)
Well, since the Purple Fuzzy is on her way to beat Roscoe with her dentures, cane, and/or a hickory mallet, I will continue the narration of this here story about a grand adventure.
After leaving the car show, Roscoe took me sight seeing. Keep in mind, neither one of us had a tablespoon of brains between us at this point. We had drooled our brains out over cars for the previous 6, 8, or 10 hours, all which was spent walking around the caraplalooza. Luckily, he had most of the brains, so he drove.
Petit Jean State Park is beauuuutiful.
After stoping at one spot, we went to see the Turtle Rocks:

Here is a link to a much larger photo of Cedar falls: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y256/minnesota68/Petit%20Jean/DSC00169.jpg If you go here, and look at the full size, you can see a white speck right to the left of the falls, below the rock overhang. Those are people. The turtle rocks I showed you earlier are right on the other side of the ridge from where I took the picture of Cedar Falls.
Ok, a few things as I wrap up this story.
1. Neither one of us got a picture with Bro Papa. He is a great man, and has great BBQ to boot. I will have to go back, so I can get more pictures of stuff like that. But speaking of BBQ, if you have never had a BBQ Frito Pie, you must try one. He takes Fritos, pulled pork, bbq sauce, coleslaw, shredded cheese, and makes a combination of them that marries the flavors together in holy matrimony. Oh me oh my...if only I had taken more pictures!
2. Speaking of pictures, I wish I had taken more. There is so many more that I should have taken. More of the car show, more of Petit Jean State Park. More, more, more, more.
3. Chellebelle and LouLou (and the kiddos) all went shopping. Im sure it would have taken about .05 nano seconds before they were bored senseless with all the cars, but next time, they will be drug to the mountain, if for nothing else but to look at the beautiful scenery.
4. It was well worth our time to meet such fine folks as Roscoe, LouLou, and Chey. I say this openly, and with a blessing towards this fine family: Their house has the peace of God residing on it. I walked it, felt right at home. If given 5 minutes, I would have had my shoes off, kicked back, and started snoring. Thats saying something right there. It also shows that LouLou is a Proverbs 31 kinda gal. And it shows that Roscoe respects her enough to let her be. God bless you!
5. You should never go to that area without a Roscoe to guide you. I said it before, but Roscoe loves his town. He is a Ambassador of Arkansas. God bless him for that too! Every building, every person, every street has a story. And he tells them with grace.
6. You should take more than 1 1/2 days to visit.
7. Rusty. The star of this whole thread. Let me just ramble about Rusty. Rusty is not some perfect show car. Thank goodness! Rusty is a drivable, 100% work of art, that you dont dare stop unless you want to be surrounded because everyone wants to talk about him. Ive had the chance to ride in top notch street rods, muscle cars, and such like. Rusty is a class all of his own. He is comfortable on a dirt road, and comfortable in the city. Never has a car matched a person so well, like Rusty and Roscoe. Then, as photos show, Roscoe trusted me to drive Rusty. This is a treat that is a once in a life time treat. Seriously. Driving a 1946 Chevy is AWESOME. Rusty has no air (unless you count the 2-55 air...2 windows down at 55 mph) but you dont notice. Rusty has no radio, he makes his own noise. Rusty has character. And NEVER take a photograph of another truck in the presence of Rusty. He got a little temperamental when I did that. Sorry...LOL Roscoe had to apologize for my obvious stupidity...then Rusty was good to go.
8. Mexican Coke-a-Cola (and or Pepsi): Made with real cane sugar. Good on its own right, but drank while driving down the road in Rusty...100x better.
9. Ice cream. Also good in its own right, enjoyed while driving Rusty makes it better, so much better...
And now, a parting shot of Rusty, driven by Roscoe:

I like the pink touch. *cough* :P
This thread reminds me of the thread years ago when I met the Dubyas. *sniff*
Since this is the conclusion of our grand adventure, I need to add a couple thoughts.... (Have you ever met a preacher that could simply dismiss when given back the microphone? I haven't. :laughhard:)
Mini and I have been communicating by text for some time, after discovering via GP that we both were car nuts, and had more than a few veiwpoints the same. Now, I am a real cop, and as such, am typically suspicious and not as trusting as some of you might think. I have never before met anyone online and then in person, and I have never invited anyone online to my house. But the more I talked (texted) with Mini, and the more I read his posts, the more I began to get a feel for who and what he was. Now, anyone, especially cops who have worked with me, will tell you I am prone to snap judgements.
I was known for pulling up at a disturbance and within a couple of minutes have one party in cuffs. I can tell you within five minutes of meeting you if I like you and that doesn't tend to change. Mini's posts and conversation led me to believe he was like the old time Pentecostals I've been raised with my entire life.
Also, as I have posted before, I am very new at the whole preaching game. Mini has been there, done that for years, and has tons of good counsel for someone like me. He has been generous with this counsel, for which I am exceedingly grateful.
So I invited him to wander down for the weekend. I figured, if we didn't get along, no big deal. I had began to think he wouldn't make it, and resigned myself to texting him pics every few minutes to rub in what he was missing. Then he informs me that Chellebelle and kiddos may wander this way too. Now I'm a little nervous. I've always been tonguetied around women. Especially beautiful ones- just ask my wife.
Speaking of my wife, the news that Chelle was coming made her day. She's always looking for a new shopping companion, and having read some of Mini's texts to me, she figured that he would have married someone compatible with her, as he and I seemed to think alot alike. :biglaugh:
Then they arrived. When Mini texted me, that they were in my county, all I could think of was how bad the yard looked and all I hadn't got done, and what if these folks were stuck up? No worries. Within minutes, I felt like I'd known Mini and his family my entire life. When Lou and Chey got home, they seemed to hit it off, and we had a great time over dinner. Lou decided that she would call in and go shopping with Chelle., which is something she rarely does. She doesnt call in. Ever.
Reports are that they had a great time! I was concerned that I talked too much to Mini... I rattled nonestop. :biglaugh: But, among all the banter and joking, I was the reciepiant of some pearls of wisdom concerning the ministry. And just as important, I found that my snap judgement was dead on. Mini and his wonderful family are the type of people I love to be around. Someone who loves God, is devoted to Him, and shows it without coming across as "holier than thou."
We absolutely loved having the opportunity to meet them and spend time with them..... but Brionna has got to talk more! :laughhard: Our little heathen/princess loved all of the Porters, but told me repeatedly that Sis Porter was "so pretty". When it comes to Brennen, though, she'll just say he's funny and get fighting mad if you call him her boyfriend. :laughhard:
In short (closing for the fifth time), this was, I hope the beginning of a yearly tradition and a great friendship. Our home is open to Mini and his family anytime, and we would feel it an honor anytime they come by. Loun and I both wish they lived a little closer.Maybe we might have to set up a GP meeting around here one year........ Oh, and I think Rusty likes you too, Mini. Speaking of cars and people being suited to one another- well, an old truck looks like it'd suit you too. Alot better than that Karman Ghia! :laughhard:
Petit Jean would be a wonderful place for a meetup. It's so pretty. :)
Pretty pictures. :)
QuoteIt also shows that LouLou is a Proverbs 31 kinda gal. And it shows that Roscoe respects her enough to let her be.
That's awesome!

Well, he helped Bro. Papa get set up, and I've heard he cooks a mean brisket. Not that I've ever been invited to taste it. *sniff* And according to Rat's Nest, he has a large quantity of hickory logs.... He and PF are on my list of must meet people, probably the next time I sashay down to the Pickards' in Boswell. That is if I don't provoke Purple Fuzzy into coming up here first.

Yall come on down. We'll fix brisket and ribs and boudain and all kinds of stuff. I'll even make you some dessert, but your wives need to come, too. ;)
Mini, I'm about 70 miles from La., so it's a bit of a trip to Dublin. It's only 5 hrs to Morrilton.

Chels brisket is AMAZING. I wish I had some now.
Haha! There is no way YOU could put ME over your knee!
I've never had brisket, but I've always wanted to try it. Not much brisket in NC that I'm aware of. Barbecue in NC is of the pulled pork variety and I'm not a fan.
I have no idea what boudain is. Would Bordain eat boudain, I wonder? Probably. What is it?
Boudain is like a sausage. Sausage with rice stuffed in it. Very good.
Wow! Talk about pinkwinking a thread.... :biglaugh: But it's talking bbq, so it's all good!

Pa is back to driving with one hand, holding his coffee with the other, and arguing with the lady on the GPS at the same time. All's normal...lol

As a teaser...
Now THAT is really rusty...
No...this is Sam.
No it's not, it's Tow Mater!
Nope...from wikipedia:
Sir Tow Mater or better known as Mater is the deuteragonist in the 2006 animated Pixar film Cars and the main protagonist in its sequel. He is voiced by Larry the Cable Guy, and was inspired by a 1951 International Harvester[1][2] tow truck but bears more of a resemblance to a 1955–57 Chevrolet or GMC; the actual inspiration may be the 1955–56 version since the hood which Mater recovers at the end of the film after a twenty-year absence lacks the "gunsights" of the 1957 model. Originally portrayed as a sidekick and friend to the film's main protagonist, Lightning McQueen, the popularity of the character eventually made him the central character in Cars spin-off media like the Cars Toons series, the Mater and the Ghostlight short and the Cars Mater-National video game, and one of the two central characters in the film Cars 2. He also appears as the main deuteragonist in other media related to Cars.
In 55 they changed the body style. Mine is a 52 Chevy 3100. So other than the lack of paint, Tow Mater and Sam have little in common.
Ill post more later, I'm pretty tired tonight.
That's pretty much the only thing I was going for there, picky puss.
Welcome one, welcome all...
Here begins a LONG post about Roscoes latest "Lets see how much trouble I can get Mini into" adventure. About a year ago, Roscoe typed this out about a old truck he use to own.
Quote
When I was a lad of around 12, there was a farmer, named Sam, who lived just down the road. I helped around the farm some (my Dad worked for him). The old man had some really cool old trucks around -- a couple of '40's and '50's Fords and the beautiful old AD Chevys. He had a 1950, a 1952, and a 1949 "Big Bolt." His favorite was a 1952 3100. I remember riding around the farm in the old truck and me and Daddy taking it to get feed for the cows.
I tried many times to talk the old man into selling that truck to Dad (he tried too), but the answer was always the same. Sam (the farmer) would look at me, mentally calculate how much money a poor little country boy could come up with, then double the figure and name it as his price. This way, he knew I couldn't buy the old truck and he could tell the missus (who didn't particularly care for the old trucks) that he'd offered to sell it but "the kid didn't have the money." Crafty old goat.
Fast forward about 20 years, and suddenly, I'm a thirty + year old cop with a wife, mortgage, small child, - and still have a hunger and obsession with Advanced Design Chevrolets. I get a call from my Dispatcher telling me I need to respond to a minor accident. When I arrive, it's my old friend Sam, driving a new Toyota.
After doing the required paperwork, I casually ask about the old trucks. He tells me he's still got all of them. His wife, who has walked over and heard the conversation, smiles at me, and while Sam's looking over the damage to the Toyota, tells me I've been talking to the wrong person about the trucks, and not to give up. I'd be able to buy one yet.
About a month later, I sold my '84 Corvette project because I could see that it wasn't filling in the hole in my heart for an old pickup. As the man drove off in the 'Vette, I told my Dad that I was going to go buy me another project. When I told him the one I had in mind, he just laughed.
Dad said "Son, that old man won't part with that." But he agreed to ride along with me and watch me try. I'd driven by the farm two or three times that week and saw the object of my desire -- the '52 -- parked next to the house. When I pulled up this time, it was gone! I saw Sam working down in the field, so I drove back and asked him about the truck. He told me it was parked back behind the barn because his wife didn't think it needed to be by the house.
As usual, I asked if he'd sell it, and, as usual, he smiled and told me I wouldn't give what he'd have to have for it. I told him to try me. He scratched his head, spit, and said "I'd hafta to have a $1,000 for it." (This was said as if it were all the money in the world.) I asked if I could look at the old truck up close and he told me sure.
We walked over to look at the truck. As Dad talked with Sam, I gave it a critical going over. Father Time hadn't been any kinder to my old friend than he had me, but under the surface rust and cow dents, the old truck seemed fairly solid. I reached in the cab and twisted the key. The little 6 banger fired off like it'd been run five minutes earlier, not the two weeks Sam told me it had been since he moved it. I was sold.
Sam told me the brakes didn't work, but everything else did. I asked him if he'd take $800, acting as if that's all I had. I could see the old gentleman's smile trying to come out as he rubbed his chin, allowing as how he just couldn't do that. You could almost hear the words in his mind, "I still get to keep it!"
He returned to conversation with Dad while I looked around some more. Finally, I told him, "Well, I guess I'll just have to give you your price." I pulled $1,000 and Sam nearly swallowed his chew. He stammered around a bit, then told me, "Bobby, I don't want you to be unhappy. I don't have to sell this old truck." I assured him I wanted the truck and reminded him that I'd tried to buy it for 20 years.
He shook my hand and said "It's yours then." I think I saw a tear as he walked away to move one of the other trucks so I could get out with my new toy. As I pulled through the gate, I discovered he wasn't kidding at all about the brakes. I asked him how long it had been since the brake fluid was checked and he told me, "Son, It ain't had brakes in 10 years. If I needed to stop, I just hit something."
After driving it home six miles without brakes, I found a tiebolt had broken on a front spring. Dad and I replaced the springs, entire brake system and changed the oil. I painted the wheels red, painted whitewalls on a used set of tires I had laying around the house, and drove it several times. Since I'm an oddball that names my vehicles, it was named "Sam" in honor of the old man that fought to keep him for so long.
At first glance, I just read it, liked the story, and thought that would be fun to do some day.
Then along came a now (in)famous meeting of the minds in Arkansas in June 2011. We on this board have already heard of the fame of Roscoes truck, Rusty. Up until that day, I had always thought of a classic truck as one that was in mint condition, perfect, and drove only on sunny days down paved roads. But a day with Rusty got me to hankering for a truck that I could drive slow, down gravel roads, around town, and whenever I wanted.
Sadly, any classic iron was out of my budget.
In August this year, Roscoe got a visit from Sams owner. He wanted to sell Sam. If he didnt sell Sam, he said, he was going to take him to visit the crusher. Roscoe said "DONT CRUSH HIM! I WANT HIM!" and thus saved Sam's life. Then he called me (which may have killed Sam :ugly: ). I already knew a little about Sam, and when Roscoe told me how much the price was, I said yes!
Roscoe and I have probably extanged hundreds of texts, PM's and calls about Sam since that initial conversation. Let me say this too: I was buying a 59 year old truck, sight unseen. Roscoe did his absolute best to represent everything about Sam in honesty and clarity. I wont lie, Sam needs a lot of work, but Sam will be a driver first and foremost, not a show truck (unless God chooses to bless me with more money than brains). :ugly:
Now, I know Sam is not perfect (fine Seth, he shares the same paint scheme as Tow-Mater), but hes gonna be a blast to drive!
On to yesterday...
I knew the first hurdle in getting Sam back to Oklahoma was finding a way to haul him. After talking it over with Pa, he said I could use his truck and trailer. Then he called last week and said that he was taking the day off, and finally, after much discussion, we decided to leave about 6:00 AM. Its 3 1/2 hours to Roscoes house, so we figured that would put us there at a good time.
Thursday evening Pa told me he would see me at 6 or "Whenever I get around." Knowing Pa, I said, "Well, ill see you at 5:30 then." Sure enough, he showed up bright and early.

We started out and it was foggy as all get out. We finally pulled over at Walmart for a bit so we could let the sun get above the horizion and then get back on the road.
Chelleebelle was excited...lol
We finally pulled into Roscoes home town around 10. The fog had slowed us down (and the bathroom breaks). We met with Roscoe at wallyworld, said hi to LouLou, and went to Petit Jean.

The fall swap meet/car show is all about military stuff. We found a ride for Roscoe:

As you can see, it would fit him well:

Here begins a LONG post about Roscoes latest "Lets see how much trouble I can get Mini into" adventure. .
He ain't seen nothin' yet... :freaky2: Wait until he's neck deep into redoing him and comes to a car show.... Mini's got the second most addictive personality I've met when it comes to cars, mine being the first. He was a pushover to sway.... :laughhard: And now I've got someone else to blame my obsession with swap meets on- " But Lou, Jeremy needs me to look for..." :laughhard:
I had a great time, except for when Lou's Caddy backslid on us and caused me to worry about Lou suddenly owning the Miata while my shop acquired a new piece of furniture in the form of a Caddy. God was good though, and it was a simple fix, for a simple mind. ;)
Sam got a new home, Bro Papa got to meet Pa Miniskirt, and meet Mini and family once again, and most importantly, Mini brought me two ice chests of Mexican Coke (Coca-cola, don't lose your minds) and glass botteled real sugar Dr. Pepper. :fork:
Ok, a few more pictures.
After eating BBQ, then going back to pick up Pa's truck, it was off to Roscoes house to finally meet Sam.
Funny story, when we turned down the road to Roscoes house, a small dog, possibly a Chihuahua (sp?) ran out in the road and would not move. The dog was probably 3 pounds tops...Chellebelle had to get out, pick it up, and go to the side of the road. Then, as she walked the last 100 feet to Roscoes, 2 more neighborhood dogs joined her. She looked like Ellie Mae Clampett. LOL
Then, I met Sam...

Once we hit I-40 back home...LOL
Driving home with Sam was one of the funniest things ever. People were passing us, giving us the thumbs up, waving, grinning. They sure like that old truck.
Im thinking about starting a page with pics and such of Sam as I get him running. Anyone interested in seeing a thread like that?
I have no interest in ME doing mechanic work (you wouldn't want me working on your car... computer maybe, but never the car) but I'd be interested if you feel like doing a "Restoring Sam" thread.
Would love to watch the progress. :bigcheese:

I was telling ol Cletus about Rusty and now Sam and guess what we are now in the market for.....yep....an old truck or car to restore. He got a raise at work and needs a hobby to keep him and the boys out of trouble.
I need to learn to keep my trap closed about this stuff. LOL Cletus gets the itch too easy!

Ones would have been better than quarters. HAHAHA! I don't know what he actually brought but i did advise that 5's and 1's might be better. :)
I still think paying for Sam in $1 bills would have been the way to go... :ugly:
