Isn't respect, be definition, something you earn? There is a respect for human life in general: I don't go up and kick a bum that's sitting in the street, but does he automatically have my respect? No.

I've always thought respect had to be earned...
Since I read your question, I have been thinking. I think that, like love, there are different kinds of respect.  While I may respect my dad as a good provider, I may not respect him in other ways for decisions that he made.

So, maybe my answer is yes and no.  Some respect must be earned, but some is just given because it should be.
