It's kind of snowy here today. My car was covered, at least. Good thing the ground is still warm enough to melt it :)

Quote from: kkay on December 21, 2012, 01:36:51 PMJust gotta figure out what the best thing is to get someone who has to stand out in the cold for 8 hours a day. Already got "long johns", underarmour shirt, t-shirt, gloves, hand/feet warmers (the things that heat up and stay warm for 6 hours), hat, face mask, extra socks.

Is there anything else I could get? I was thinking about more shirts but I don't know how he could wear any more.

Nathan works outdoors the entire time.  Is it only standing outside?  You said "extra socks,"  do you mean the "specially made" socks for cold weather that also keep their feet dry?  I got Nathan some of those and he likes them for the days he isn't as active.

Other things that he has liked are: sports mp3 player that doesn't inhibit his work, quality shoes, serious grade manly moisturizer- winter time is killer on guys hands/elbows/knees/face, and then other things that Nathan has still liked are grilling tools.  I don't know about you all but cold weather doesn't deter people up here from grilling... lol  Stuff for his truck.  There is a spray window de-icer that is Awesome.  I got Nathan a quality XL thermos one year, about 10 yrs ago.  He still uses it.

I would check Eddie Bauer.  They have not only things I wouldn't otherwise think of but also good quality things that last.   Hope that helps!

Ok, it's after 9 so I am going to hit up these stores and see how much off my list I can get done.  Des Moines is supposed to have gotten 12in. of snow last night and that's our half way mark for traveling.  High winds are going to make our travels tonight exciting because it blows the snow like it's sand all over the road making it hard to see where the road/lanes begin and end... lol  We should get to the stinkin' hotel at about midnight.  I'm SO glad to be coming back home for Christmas though, I'm well over being at hotels at Christmas.  bleh.

How much snow did you get Seth?

kkay

That does help! I just bought him some thick socks - he layers them. Puts on long socks, then ankle socks. He has company issued boots. He just stands outside all day pretty much. Makes sure no one does anything fishy. I do need to get him some more regular socks though. I only got the ankle ones. I might get him a thermos 'cause he's been wanting to eat soup for lunch rather than a sandwich. Good tips! I'm also thinking about getting more of the hand/feet warmers. They have 40 at Wal Mart for around $15, which is MUCH better than where I went yesterday.

Melody

smh.  It would at least be entertaining to read/hear all the silliness about the Mayan calendar if it actually said the world was ending.  It doesn't.  So it just makes people sound stupid for getting riled for or against something that isn't even claimed.

kkay

I've heard so many different things about today. Some people say they've found another part of the Mayan calendar. Others say there's a different calendar we should be paying attention to. It's all rubbish. Mom and I both agree that God isn't a liar (duh) and he said no one will know when He's coming back. I guess unless you just believe the world will cease to exist (without God coming back), then it doesn't make a bit of sense.

kkay

Yay! I found some heavyweight socks at Wal Mart, of all places. Well, it says they sell them at the store I'm going to. Gonna go after work to pick some up. Now I just have to wait to see if the face mask and hand warmers worked at all today.

Ain't that a kick in the pants?!? Been waiting for over a month to be able to afford the part I need for the Corvette. I finally bought it, installed it, and the 'vette runs better than ever. While it's idling, I tighten things up- and hear a noise. I popped the hood just in time to see the dryrotted accessory belt self destruct.....  Waiting time again... I swear this thing don't want me to drive it.. :biglaugh:

I am finally HOME!  Long day today, but a fun one, where I got many things done that I wanted to get done.  The factory Christmas lunch we were serving went off without a hitch.  One of the church ladies had made a banana split cake, and while we were at the factory serving the food I spent the whole time complaining (in a teasing way) that she was putting out too many slices of it, I wouldn't get a piece.  She knew I was just picking - it has pineapple, which I don't like.  But it was fun.  The boss's wife was there and chipped in, getting a second piece of banana split cake, taking two pieces home (it really was VERY good... if you like pineapple) and making a big deal of it every time she got a piece.  "Uh oh Isaac, I'm getting another piece... oh look, this piece has THREE cherries on it!"

In sadder news, two girls I pick up on the church bus route will be leaving to move to Baltimore - permanently - tomorrow.  ONE STINKING DAY before the church Christmas program, their gifts, etc. the family has to move to Baltimore.  They got their gifts Wednesday night because of this but it's not going to be the same... Bus route won't be the same, Children's Church won't be the same.   :-\

Woo-Hoo! I want to shout! As I made reference to earlier, we closed on a refinance of our home.  They had told us to be prepared to pay nearly $700 tonight in assorted fees, so we skrimped and saved to have the money....lady just left our house after signing the papers. The fees? Just under $240.  That, my friends, is a $400+ blessing just when we needed it most. AND- we expected payment to be due in January- nope- February. That's another large  financial blessing, just when I was wondering where we would get the money for new tires for my work truck.....

SWEET!! Love it when God works out nice surprises like that, Roscoe!

In sharing which will interest none of the guys, and only a few of the gals....
I just got done converting a pair of maternity pants into a skirt. The pants were brown corduroy, so I added patchwork panels with varying shades of brown/tan corduroy, and even a smidge of a floral corduroy. I like the patchwork look, but I'm not completely thrilled with how it turned out as a whole. I may tinker with it next week a little more. I dunno. Or I might just wear it and be glad to have a skirt that actually FITS me right now. ;) (I'm attaching a pic of both the front and back views, just in case anyone wants to see.)

A couple inches, give or take, around here.

I yanked the remaining salvageable little turnips this morning.

Even if God did come back today, it wouldn't actually be the end of the world.....there's a lot of things left to transpire before the actual end and destruction of this world.  It would not be a good place to be, but, it would still be here.

SippinTea:  I'm a guy, but I do have a sense of style, and that looks nice.  Now make yourself a brown cape for winter.  They're nice and warm.

ST-I really like the patchwork on the back, but something with the patchwork on the front just seems....off. I don't know how to put it. But overall I like it

I don't have to go back to work til Wednesday! Woot! I pack up to go house sit tomorrow through Christmas morning. My family has decided to have Christmas at my parents sunday then I'll be traveling to Morristown on Christmas for extended family day. Yes these are the same family who were horrible to me on Thanksgiving. I made mom promise to fill up my gas tank so I can take my car and leave whenever I wanted/needed.

What is "off" about it is, the patchwork looks shifted to the left.  Personally I like it, but it will probably subconsciously irritate most people, because it looks out of balance.  Put a light colored patch at the bottom right.

Actually, Heather, you're on the right track. The original patchwork piece I did for the front looked better. But I'd made the piece too wide, and had to narrow it up a bit. That's one of the things I'm not thrilled with. When I had to make it narrower, it lost some of the design I'd wanted in there. :-? Ah well.

Isaac, I have a poncho - does that count? *grin*

I keep trying to get pictures of all these cars with huge piles of snow on them.  But it's dark.  There's an inch of ice on the road intermentantly.  No worries Rosco, to know how to drive in this is to be a true northerner.

Right, Shep?

Roscoe

Snow don't bother me. I don't like ice. I've had to drive on ice enough in the course of my job I have no issues. It's all the other drivers that I hate.

Ah, it was an overturned semi.  A UPS one, on a bridge.  Perhaps the driving conditions is why this is the Bible belt, people calling on Jesus.
