My grandmother told us that on New Years Day you have to eat Beans and bread which is a poor person's food - by doing so you will have a profitable year!

Spill salt?  Toss a Pinch over your shoulder!

Never step on a grave in a cemetery...
Never stare at the dead body at funerals...
Never take a flower or plant home from funerals because it will bring death to your family...
Never count the stars in the evening sky, if you do - you will die...
An itchy palm means money will come your way...
If you give someone a knife, they need to give you a penny so that neither of you will die...
To give someone a purse or wallet without money in it will bring that person bad luck.

Even being raised "Apostolic" there was still this fear of jinxing good things. Or that if you claimed something positive, the devil would ruin it.  It would be justified as being called pride.

I know one apostolic lady who believes that if you are flying - never express that you fear flying because you will crash.

The person who opens the blade of a pocket knife must be the one who closes it.  If one opens it and another closes it something bad will happen.  I never did get clear on what the bad thing is or whether it will happen to the one who opened it or the one who closed it, but there are people around here who will not dare to close a knife someone else opened. 

Which raises the question:  If you can't remember whether or not you opened the knife, or if nobody knows who opened it, does it stay opened for all time?

According to my mother you have to eat black eye peas and cabbage. Black eye peas for luck, and cabbage for wealth. Well they been eating like that on New Years day my entire life and we all still broke, so I don't think it really works. lol

My grandmother always said if your left hand itches you will shake hands with a stranger, and if your right hand itches you will receive unexpected money. Now, if I thought this was the least bit true I would keep a poison ivy plant close by to stick my right hand in from time to time. lol

My uncle once gave me a silver dollar - he said it would bring me luck. As long as I had it with me I would never be attacked by Polar Bears and Pygmies.  You know what? It worked!

My grandmother use to keep a horse shoe with the open side up nailed above her front door because she said it held the good luck in. Once the nail came loose and it turned upside down and she made my grandfather remove it and replace it with a new horse shoe because the old one had "spilled all of it's luck". lol

I've heard of all of these except the "walk on a crack" one... And in the same vein as the hooting owl, we were always told that if a dog suddenly starts howling after dark, its owner or someone close had died. Neighbor's hounds gave me some VERY uncomfortable nights...

And the pocketknife one- I always heard that if you give a friend a pocketknife they should return it the same way you give it to them. If you gave it to them open and they closed it, it would cut the friendship bonds.

My Grandmother had a ton of superstitions she believed were true. I think I scared her to death more than once because I would go out of my way to do some of them to prove they weren't true. She even gave me a spanking once for opening an umbrella in her house. lol

If the number 13 appeared anywhere in the total of what she was purchasing she would either buy something else to change the total or put something back. If an item cost $13 she would just refuse to purchase it because "clearly it's a warning you shouldn't buy it".

I know that one is wrong.  When I was a kid we had at least one cat at all times, and sometimes we had a black cat.  When my black cat crossed my path it was usually good luck, because he was on his way to sit in my lap and purr.
