I am trying to figure out what would be best for my hair...I'm thinking about getting a perm.  But I still like the option of having straight hair too.  My hair is wavy when it's wet, but when it dries and it has been scrunched it just kinda frizzes out a little.  My hair straightens pretty good and i like that. But when i want to wear it curly, i want more defined curls...not really tight spiral curls, but kinda, loose curls.  And i don't want to damage my hair or have it breaking off or something.  So if anyone has any suggestions that would be greatly appreciated.  Also, if you have had a body wave, i would like to know about it.  Thanks!

If you want big curls without damage, you should use velvet hot rollers!!  I have 2 sets and they both have 2 sizes... I use the smaller size when I wear my hair up and want curlier curls.  I use the larger size when I want to wear my hair down and have big bouncy curls.  I also have naturally curly hair but mine is LOOOOONG so I don't curl it and wear it down often.

I didn't know they had such things. Where do you find them?

Not that I have time to curl my hair.   But hey, maybe someday.  :)

That a pentecostal woman doesnt know they have hot rollers is unimaginable to me.  :o

No, no, you missed the point: The whole idea of 'velvet hot rollers' that don't cause damage.  I have Hot Sticks (evil things), and curl my hair an average of once every 4-6 months. It's just not worth the hassle, or the wear and tear on my hair.  ;)

Ohhhh Sippin!!  Hot rollers are MUCH easier and MUCH less damaging than hot sticks!!  I'm cringing now just remembering the damage of hot sticks!!

I have 2 sets... The first set is velvet and I love them!!  I've had them forever though... probably like 10 years!! I can't seem to find them online... LOL  They are made by Revlon.

Here are some nice velvet ones though:

This is my other set... I bought it for travel but love it so much that I use it more than the other set now... they are not velvet but they are rubber and I have never had one get stuck or pull any of my hair or anything!!

Thanks for the tip!  :thumbsup2:

I don't like using stuff that damages my hair. I don't even use hairspray. Yucky stuff!  :)  If I decide I can justify spending the money for the rare occasions I curl my hair...I'll go check these curlers out. LOL

or grannybun it and throw on a wig...works for some women I have met!

Ugh. I know people that do that too, but that's cheating. Never let it be said I'm a cheat...sneaky, maybe (*waves at NewKris*), but not a cheat.  :biglaugh:

I know a lot of people who use hairpieces!

I agree with Christi - if you're going to roll your hair, velvet rollers are the best! Hot sticks and plastic rollers are pretty scary - they've yanked out enough of my hair to cover a balding yak, I'm sure. ;)

I never use any kind of hot roller or hot stick.  I've got a set of off brand ones but don't really see any point in using them.  The kind of rollers I do use is sponge rollers.  I put them in while my hair is damp then leave them in over night.

my hair is stick straight. i had a perm probably 10 years ago and it fell out in 4 days. i figured God had a plan for giving me straight hair. i shouldn't argue with Him.  :biglaugh:

UPCgurl, sounds like you have the same kind of hair texture I do. It can be a bit frustrating, but we have the best of both worlds. We can go straight (somewhat) or curly. I have found Frizz-Ease products work best for my hair. It's a line of products by John Frieda and there is even one product in this line that I now can't live without, it's "dream curls". It gives those half-life waves a little more definition and bounce, makes them curl a little more like they're suppose to be doing and doesn't leave your hair feeling sticky like with mousse or gels. I'm with ST and don't like anything in my hair, but with my hair texture I need something or I'll go around with a fro or I just have to straighten it, which causes damage. Bio-silk is also great, but only for the frizz. It's expensive, but you really do only have to use just a tiny bit and you probably won't need to use it every day so it lasts a long time.

I've done the perm thing a few times. The first time, I thought it would be easier to take care of... wash and go... it wasn't easier. Then hairstylists (this was before I was in church) convinced me that the perms now have great conditioners and cause minimal damage to your hair. Wrong. They always managed to convince me that it would make my hair so much better in so many ways, yet it made my hair so much worse in so many ways. I think it's worse on people who already have somewhat frizzy hair. My hair is now thinning and I just can't help but believe it's due to damage done to my scalp from those chemicals. Some of it may be hereditary, but I don't think all of it is.

Just remember, there is no such thing as heat that is good for your hair, and no chemicals are good for your hair, much less the harsh ones that actually burn your skin like perms. Ever think about why people have to wear gloves when they put them in?
God determines who walks into your life....it's up to you to decide who you let walk away, who you let stay, and who you refuse to let go.

I like hot sticks  hehe, I just prefer to use them cold over night  I don't totally care for curls so that's only like once in a blue moon for me... I like crinkles! I braid my damp hair back in corn rows and then sleep on it.

Maybe you should try a different kind of gel...one that isn't so stiff.

Then you can spray on the gel when your hair is wet, and blow dry your hair upside down using a difusser. That will probably help your hair to curl better. My sister's hair is like yours and her's will curl right up. You may have to try a few different gels tho to find the one that works the best on your hair.

I like Aussies Sprunch and Spray Gel. If you want to spend more money, try something like Paul Mitchell's Sculpting Glaze or Redken's Curl line.  ;)

I had to grin at this Rach...
Hebrews 12:12-16 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you
