What about the "security" issue?  I always have heard that Linux=Mac>Windows

but this is the real question: is linux better than vista? since it seems in the near future its going to be forced upgrades.........sigh

After using Ubuntu 7.10 and they "eyecandy" it comes with, I dont see why anyone would want to use Vista.

Unless Mac has changed it practices, Mac actually tends to have more vulnerabilities than Windows.  I don't know the stats/comparisons with Linux.
Move along, nothing to see here.

Well, I dun it today...I got a brand new laptop.

I had been wanting a good dual core laptop, and this morning, my IT guy tells me he has just what I am looking for.  So, here I am with a new Toshiba Satellite....

It was at a price I couldnt resist.

So anyways, its got Vista. *gag* This has got to be the worst OS I have ever used...lol

I have it dual booting Ubuntu.  I put Ubuntu 7.04 on it, and will let it update to 7.10 tonight.

But anyways, Im happy!

any upgrade reports yet on the new kernel release?

I've been putting off upgrading, since my hardware is fairly low-end, and the driver support is still a bit spotty for a couple of components.

mini

Well, frankly I love they look and feel of the latest release.  From a untechnical standpoint, it seems they finally figured out the issues with the drivers (ie soundcards) for dell computers.  But then when I put 7.10 on the new laptop, it kinda went crazy, and said I had no sound card installed.  LOL

When it comes to eyecandy, one thing is for sure.  Ubuntu has Vista beaten, gagged, tied to a chunk of metal, and dropped in the river in typical Mafia fashion.  Oh boy, you can see through a window on Vista and they stack up.  On Ubuntu, you can see through the entire desktop, there is desktop cube, and if you want to see a little rain, hit shift-f9.  LOL

And what in the world is up with Vista borking every time you try to add/remove a program?  Good lands!  This would drive a man insane!  I try to run uninstall, and the screen goes black, a window pops up and says something about "dis program might just be evil, do you want to run for your life, or play Russian roulette with your system?"  Its just a uninstall program...LOL

Here is a comic that explains programing at windows.

I dont think they were drinking the right kind of sodas during Vista programing days...

I put it on my new laptop (dual boot) and I love it.

Had one issue with sound, added a line of code and it worked.

My internal wireless card even works with 7.10!!!

How do you have them networked?  If you have them networked.

I have 12 computers on my home network.  Two are Windows Server 2003 (domain controllers), nine are Win XP, and one is Linux (Ubuntu 7.10).  My network is a mix of wired and wireless.

Downloaded openSUSE last night.  Installing it on a extra HD I had here.  It was 4.1 gigs, so it took all night to download.  The installation process is about 10 times harder than Ubuntu's.  I guess I could compare it to installing XP fresh.

Its about done updating, and ill start using it.

We will see how it goes.

somehow i totally missed this question lol

i have one computer on the dsl, then have a network hub and all the computers run through it. i have an 8 port hub, but also have three 5 port hubs, and two hubs that are 5 ports with wireless, but dont use them, dont like wireless. so right now i am just using the 8 port hub.

My dad is bringing home a 8 and a 16 port router.  Now I have a chance to hook up some redundancy computers and install a domain computer onto our network, and maybe a honeypot for the neighbors to play around with since they seem to like trying to get into our network.

Well, I finally (today) got finished updating.  I pulled a rather dumb stunt the other day and hit cancel by accident.  Needless to say, Ubuntu didn't like me for a few days after that.  So I tried this again this afternoon and got everything working.  Luckily, everything that it had downloaded before was still in a file, so it picked up where it left off, and im up and running now!!
