Too many to pick out one incident, really. The 90 year old lady that was convinced that people from Kansas City,Missouri were living on top of her refridgerator would have to be close to the top. A co worker explained to her that if she would get plug in air freshners, the people would leave. He went to Walmart, bought a couple and the next time we responded to the call, gave them to the old lady. He stopped a 7 day a week call with that one brilliant idea.

1) Glazed- I like the classics

2) The night I received a call from Dispatch advising me that there was a man in the lobby wanting to speak with an officer. As an aside, the dispatcher said  " he claims he has a knife." I go rolling up to the police department and go in the public entrance to speak with the man. As I approach the door, I see that the man is someone that I went to high school with. I knew he'd had problems with drugs, had dealt with him fairly frequently, but had never had a problem with him. He'd wrestle with some of the other officers, but always trusted and obeyed me.  I could see that he didn't have a knife, so I holstered my gun and made the mistake that will get a cop killed- I let my guard down.

I stepped inside the building to talk with him. The lobby area was a very small area, maybe 10 foot by 10 foot. He was leaning against one wall and I took the position across from him and began to talk with him. He explained to me that he'd been mistreated by another officer and began to get loud. I could tell by his eyes that he was high on something. I asked him, "Hey, man, my dispatcher said you had a knife. Do you? " He  looked at me for a second, then his right hand went to his front pants pocket.

I drew my weapon and told him to get his hand out of his pocket slowly. He did- holding a razor sharp boning knife in a knife fighting grip. He continued to raise the knife over his head while looking at me and ignoring my commands to drop the knife. I was yelling at him that I was going to kill him if he didn't drop the knife. He looked at me and moved ever so slightly. I knew that I was a stabbed man, all I could think of was ,"maybe I can drop him before he stabs me more than once."  I began to squeeze the trigger, and just as I did, he dropped the knife. I was able to stop the trigger pull before the shot went off, and tackled the man just as other officers arrived. We had to fight him to get him locked up.

The next day, I went back to the jail and talked to him. I asked him why he'd even considered stabbing me. He told me, "Bob, I was high on xanax, and I'd huffed paint. It wasn't you, it was the uniform." I told him that he should thank God because it was a miracle that my gun had not already went off and asked why he'd stopped. He told me that he'd looked in my eyes while he was getting ready to jump me and told me  " I knew that you were going to kill me."
He apologized several times to me. I still have the boning knife in my shop on a shelf to remind me of God's grace in keeping me safe.

Q: Tell us the one moment in your career that you said to yourself: "This is why I became a cop"

Q: Tell us the one moment in your career (if you do not mind) that you said to yourself: " Why did I become a cop?"

1) The time I arrested a drunk driver for DWI and fighting with her boyfriend. She had her 85 year old mother in the vehicle with her. The elderly lady was an Alzheimer's sufferer, which hits real close to home, as my mother is also a victim. The lady was scared to death, and the daughter had given her a beer to drink when the old lady had complained of being thirsty. It took every bit of God and willpower I had to keep from beating the daughter to death- old folks and children are my weaknesses. If my sergeant hadn't been there, I'm not sure I could've held back. When we got to the p.d., I bought the old lady a soda, talked her down calmly, and contacted protective services. Thanks to my call and follow ups, I was able to get the old lady admitted to a nursing home, where she died several years later, being taken care of. The case worker told me that they had suspected abuse before, but had not been able to prove it satisfactorily to the court until my call and the report I wrote. That instance was one of many that I felt like I had done some good for someone and being a cop was worthwhile.

2) Anytime in the last two years, lol.  One of my close friends was killed in a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle a little over a year ago, just one week from retirement. His killer got life-  My friend  got death. Didn't seem fair, I wanted the killer to be killed too. Prior to that, one of my boys was involved in an incident in which he shot a man in the line of duty.  The community became angry towards the police department even though the officer was justified. (The officer and the suspect were different races) Made me wonder why I was fair and evenhanded, yet still considered the enemy when all I had ever done was pin a badge on and tried to do the right thing. Some of the people that called me names were people that I'd helped personally before.

Thanks for the honesty.

You man with a knife story brings back flashbacks for me Bro.  I was working security at an inner city hospital when I got a man with a knife call.  Turns out a psych ward discharge found a butcher knife and was trying to break into the hospital to get someone.  There were 4 guards on that night and 3 of them refused to back me up. I had to take him down, cuff him and deliver him to our holding facility alone.  Frankly it was the grace of God that kept me alive.

What is the best part of being a police officer?  What is the worst?

And if you have ever watched any of those "real life" cop shows, is that really for real?  I've seen some of them in passing (passing through a room where a TV was on :P ) and I have a hard time believing some people can be that stupid.

What is the best part of being a police officer?   Ya get to drive really fast, carry a gun, and have pretty flashing lights that no one else can. :biglaugh: What is the worst? Trying to pick up something for dinner at the grocery while still in uniform. everybody has a question or problem for you. :biglaugh:

And if you have ever watched any of those "real life" cop shows, is that really for real?  I've seen some of them in passing (passing through a room where a TV was on :P ) and I have a hard time believing some people can be that stupid.  Yes, People are THAT stupid. Many times, I've had instances that would've fit right in with some of the "real life" shows. :biglaugh: For instance, the guy that watched me demonstrate a field sobriety test, then told me " I can't do that when I'm sober." He was found guilty after the judge watched the video from my car. :laughhard:

Well, the one sure way to get me to wisconsin is to have a wedding.  :laughhard: Barring that- um, I don't know? We may have to explore the "halfway" idea, since the Miata also gets around 30 ish mpg-  but these gas prices have got to go down! :o

I'll never tell.
All kidding aside, this is her M.O. for computer things. She'll sign up, post a bit, then leave it dormant for months. Claims she doesn't have time for it. She'll be back when you least expect it, probably to pound on me about something or the other. We're considering HughesNet satillate internet to replace our slow dial up. If we find the money in the budget for that, you'll probably see her more, because she'll wind up with a netbook to surf with.
I think she would prefer a piano for the house to the netbook and internet, though- it's also being considered.

Skip the piano and get an 88 key keyboard.  Trust me.  With my computer and 88 keys I can play a better piano than the one at church.  Mmmmmm.

Of course you can't play it when the power is out...  That's the only thing a real piano has over mine.

Unless Wild Blue has gone down in price lately you might be happier getting an AT&T USB clip like the one I have.  When I last checked they cost about the same per month, and the AT&T clip can go with you wherever you go.

I am intrigued by the whole recording side of things with the digital pianos and a computer... maybe I should go to Psalms thread for this... lol
Title: Re: Ask five-oh
Post by: Lynx on March 23, 2011, 04:31:54 AM
Technically it's not a digital piano, it's a really big pack of piano samples.  Each key is recorded at about 16 different levels (loudnesses, strength of key strike) so when you play soft it doesn't just sound like a loud hit with the volume turned down.

Short version:  Technically it's not a digital piano, it's a recording of a very good acoustic piano, note by note and all different dynamics for each note.

We are actually planning to use a CP-300 to record my Pastors songs... I have bought numerous programs... and finally settled on one, but am definitely an amateur when it comes to recording software, and need to find a good teaching program or school on running a sound system as well... we have Piano, Accoustic Guitar (a six and 12 string) and a bass to record, and possibly drums, but I know the program we are using can digitally add drums... Using an Mbox 2 and ProTools LE.

I'm somewhat of a "people person", a talker- I know you'd never have guessed that- so I spend alot of the time talking to senators, representatives, and other people who are much more important to me. Many of them like to stop and chat, and I take advantage to tell them what I think about whatever issue that is important to me at the time. :biglaugh:

We only spend two hours on each post at a time- for instance, 2 hours on the west door, two hours riding around in a car taking calls,2 hours working the east door, then two hours walking around the building. That is a somewhat typical day, and  it goes by faster than you would think. :thumbsup2:

Kimber Ultra carry 1911, with rosewood stocks and a built in laser. I nearly bought one last year, but was afraid of the consequences when the better half discovered the purchase.
Realy, though, any custom built small frame 1911 in .45 caliber would work.  And I'd like to have the Judge. and a Colt Commander Officer's model 1911.
Don't get me started on the long gun side.... AR15, a couple of carbines, a Browning Automatic Rifle in .50 cal, an antique drum fed Tommy gun, and the absolutly awesome drum fed automatic shotgun, I believe it's an A11- check Youtube for it.

Kimber Ultra carry 1911, with rosewood stocks and a built in laser. I nearly bought one last year, but was afraid of the consequences when the better half discovered the purchase.
Really, though, any custom built small frame 1911 in .45 caliber would work.  And I'd like to have the Judge. and a Colt Commander Officer's model 1911.
Don't get me started on the long gun side.... AR15, a couple of carbines, a Browning Automatic Rifle in .50 cal, an antique drum fed Tommy gun, and the absolutely awesome drum fed automatic shotgun, I believe it's an A11- check Youtube for it.
:stupid: Amen to all of the above!

Although... while I will not argue about the Kimber 1911 being awesome in general... for $1300, you can get an amazing Sig GSR 1911... that for me was better than the Kimber, and any other affordable 1911 (key word being affordable, say under $1800). Although, I'd love to get that new Long Slide Ambidextrous 1911 that came out, I forget who the Manf. is... lol.  But it was AWESOME!  It may have been Para Ordnance or even Kimber... but it was super-sweet! (Like 5-0 would skip his morning doughnuts if he knew he could shoot it for free!  LOL)

Question for five-oh:  Who or what do you intend to shoot with all those guns?
Cats.  :laughhard:

(I just noticed this question and had to answer it.....)

Sig also has a new 1911 in .22 caliber that I've been trying to find for a few months new..... I'm beginning to like Sig....

What did you do with your wife?  We haven't seen her for quite some time.  Do we need a missing persons investigation?  I know that's not your department, but surely you know which officers handle this.

A Sig in .22 Caliber?  Really? What model is it?  I am looking for a decent .22 - I want to join a shooting league and plan to go Ruger Mark III or newer.

Ballistic vest / Body Armor:  Interior or exterior?  The cops locally have gone to the exterior vests for comfort and ease of Movement. The vests are the same color as their uni shirts.

Which Taser do you prefer? The M18 or The M26?

She's around....she's not as big into computers as I am. She'll wander by and check things out, but it's rare. She will look while I'm online occasionally to see what I'm laughing at...

The SIG .22 cal 1911 style is actually made by a company called German Sport Guns, or GSG. They make the gun and market it under the SIG brand, Colt brand and GSG I believe. At least that's what I'm told. I've saw a Sig branded one and a colt branded one and they look identical to me.. not badly priced, between $300 and $400 I think. :thumbsup2:
When I wear body armour it's always been interior. When I worked the street I wore it religiously. Now- hardly ever.
And Taserwise- I carry whatever they issued me. I haven't a clue. The whole Taser deal, while I can see it's worth, is kinda foreign to me.

I've spent ten years patrolling and policing without one, and never ran into an instance that my baton or gun wasn't the needed answer. I've used pepper spray exactly one time. Amazingly, I've been hit with pepper spray while on the street exactly one time. And yes, it was the same arrest. Crackhead hit my hand when I fired off the pepper spray and directed most of it in MY eyes. Related note- a 6 foot tall 200 lb crackhead can be pulled through a mostly closed door and cuffed by a blinded, seriously p.o.'d 5'7" cop...... We'd better leave the details of the aftermath in history, where they belong.  :laughhard: Suffice it to say I was NOT the  Godly, compassionate person I am today...

So. Since I now know you've seen Courageous...

Do cops really do the "slingshot" maneuver and fling a buddy out the door of a cop car if they're after someone on foot? (Questions I should have asked my uncle years ago, but didn't... *lol*)

:beret:
Uhhh...no. I've jumped out of a few still moving cars in my younger days, but it was never intentional.  :laughhard: We always rode one to a car- my preferred method of capture was to chase 'em with the car. I've taken an Impala places a Jeep shouldn't go- ditches, clotheslines, fences- no prob.  :laughhard: Scooped one young man right up....but I digress.  That, and I used to have a bad temper and tended to throw things. I've caught a couple after a well aimed flashlight throw.....maybe I oughta be quiet now.. :laughhard:

And if your uncle was a real oldtimer- he probably remembers the "fleeing felon" rule- if you knew they were a felon, or that they had just committed a felony, you were free to shoot them. They were bought and paid for....

He's been in law enforcement of one form or another most of his life. But he... uhh... well, I'll tell you dad's comment about him... "__name__, the only difference between you and the bad guys is that you're the one wearing a badge."

Now I'm really curious! I'd love to hear the story about "scooping someone up". But maybe you can't tell that one. *grin*

It's been said that the best cops are half a step from being a thug themselves. :P You gotta think like them to catch them. I've a friend that did a study for a research paper in college comparing longtime cops to other folks'. He found that most older cops' thought processes and habits were very similar to serial killers. The difference was the motivation and methods, and results. Makes sense to me- most serial killers are, at a basic level, hunters of men. So are cops. I'm just thankful God decided I was a better fisher of men than hunter of men. :laughhard:

And in regards to the scoop-I had a young man decided that he didn't enjoy my company and took off running from me. I chased on foot a very short distance and realized 1) he was considerably taller, younger, and faster than me, 2) he had no donuts or other motivating items on him and 3) this obviously wasn't working like I wanted it to.  :laughhard:

While calling for back-up, I ran back to my car to try to catch up with the fleet footed rascal. One of my officers flushed him and told me the direction he wa moving, so, knowing the area, I cut down an alley at a fairly high clip. I guessed right- he suddenly jumped over a fence and landed within ten feet of my car. I couldn't get completely stopped- my bumper caught him in the back of the knees and he just slid right up on the hood. He wasn't hurt, my car wasn't hurt, and I managed to get him cuffed and in custody. And that, Ms. ruby, is how I scooped one up....just like scooping up trash with a shovel. Only my shovel was an Impala. :laughhard:

I don't guess I have...in all honesty, I've been trying to cut back on chocolate, dr pepper and all that. Kinda like the old country song , "Everything I love is killin' me".

And yeah, to put it nicely, my uncle IS a thug. Or was until God started working on him. Now he's.... umm.... maybe a bit nicer thug? He's not where I'd like to see him. We'll just put it that way. ;) But it's nice to see God doing His thing. :thumbsup2:
