Title: Going back to school.
Post by: Tricia Lea on November 04, 2009, 06:36:14 AM
Well I decided I am going back to school. I did the school application and financial aid application. The federal financial aid one has already told me that it appears I will be eligible for a pell grant of up to $5350, and due to me being on disability I should be eligible for other grants. I have decided to go into early childhood education. That might change but I like working with young kids.
Anyone else decide to go back to school after a long time out? How did it go?

Plans are to start in Jan. if everything works out

That's great, Tricia.  Hope it all goes well.  I thought about going back many times, but never did.

I did it and you can do it, too. My daughter was younger, though. You may have it easier. Yours is almost adult age.

You can to an Elementary Education program. You can still use it to work with younger kids.

Going to be a challange for sure. Have not been in school since 1990. I graduated in 89, Went to RCCC 2 quarters after that then quit. Didnt have near the best study habits back then. Too much procrastination. Hopeing I dont repeat that lol. Didnt have near the best grades back then either

Well did good on my computer skills test yesterday, and my reading comperhention test today they said I did great. Did ok on math. Have to retake the writting skills test thurs morning. If I dont do good on the retake just means an extra class. Prefer not to have to take an extra class though lol

Congrats!   :thumbsup2:  You'll do beautifully!  I'm finally going to school.  We're talking seven years and eleven months in the making.  I do not qualify for financial aid, but it's okay.  I have a job and in February, my monthly expenses will drop by four-hundred and eighty-five dollars a month, as I'll have finished paying off three obligations!  I'm terribly excited about this!     My biggest concern about attending school, though, is my inability to be in more than one place at a time.  I work an insane amount of time and adding more to a schedule which is already ripping at the seams has me scared silly.  Then I remind myself that I'm the Ninja Empress of the Universe and all is well again.   :freaky2:

When do classes start for you, Tricia?
Title: Re: Going back to school.
Post by: Tricia Lea on January 04, 2010, 01:49:55 AM
Jan 11th .
I go tomorrow though and get my books
I just  went through the bookstore online to see what the cost will be
$712(everything new)
I am hoping some will be availble used.
I have a friend that took the same math class last semester. If they are using the same book she is giving me hers. So I am hoping that will be one less $125 book
Told her I would give her some $ for it when Pell grant checks came out in Feb but she told me dont worry about it :)
The calculator they have you use is $150 in itself

My kids were able to get some of their books online much cheaper.

My courses

MAT-070-41 Introductory Algebra   Mon Wed Fri

EDU-145-40 Child Development       Tue

PSY-150-43 General Psychology      Mon Wed Fri

ENG-111-48 Expository Writing       Mon Wed Fri

I thought about that PF. I am using a Pell grant an don't have cash to pay out for books so this quarter I am going through the school bookstore and some of the $ I have left in my Pell grant check put up so I can just go search for cheapest books

Post by: Sis on January 04, 2010, 04:25:04 AM
Our school let you have the books, and sent the $$ info to the office. They deducted the amount from the check before they gave it to you.

Post by: CDAGeek on January 04, 2010, 10:31:55 PM
That's how my community college worked - the Uni I'm at now just sends you a check after tuition and you have to pay cash for the books like everything else.

10 Things Not to Buy in 2010

Unless a student absolutely needs brand-new textbooks, they can use several alternatives to save.

Shop for used textbooks, which can help you save 70% to 90% off the retail price, says Mike Gatti, the executive director at the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, a trade group. Check out web sites like CheapestTextbooks.com, Booksprice.com or Amazon.com. Many college bookstores also sell used texts.

Another option is downloading books online. Sites like Coursesmart.com sell subscriptions to digital copies of more than 7,000 textbooks. TextbookMedia.com allows students to download textbooks for free. You can also rent textbooks on Chegg.com.
Title: Re: Going back to school.
Post by: Sis on January 05, 2010, 08:56:45 PM
The trouble with getting used books is, they change books every two or three years. That's why you can't sell them back all the time.  It's a racket. I should be in this racket. Good money in it, exploiting poor students.

Did wind up having to do something today I didn't want to have to do. Was hoping I could get through without having to request accommodations. But I cant see the overheads even from the front row.
I went to the disabilities counselor and she is going to have the teachers print up the overheads so I can have a printed copy at my seat. Then she also requested all handouts and tests to be in large print and some other stuff.
I just want to be able to blend in not be like o you need all this extra stuff

/me hugs Tricia

I'm glad they are working with you and glad you feel that way cause so many want extra "accommodations" because they are just ....well I'm gonna say it even though it's not PC... they are just lazy.  It's different if they NEED the help but some folks don't.  I'm glad you are just trying to do what you can, and then getting help when you can't.

Post by: Tricia Lea on January 14, 2010, 04:41:12 AM
I wish I didnt have to do it. I did have a math teacher that had already noticed I couldnt hardly see the overhead but the Psyc teacher literally told the class he dont give any accomidations unles hes told to by the school and his print is even smaller. Thats why I went on to the school counslor that handles that. He acted like he wasn't too happy when I handed him the paperwork she gave me. :-?

Teachers who make it difficult for students who are doing their best shouldn't be teaching at all.  :smirk2:

Glad you went above his head, Tricia.

I'm really proud of you for going back to school and tackling this new adventure/challenge. It can't be easy to return to a classroom setting after being out of it for some years.

You can do so much with a teaching degree. People assume you'll get stuck in a classroom for a whole school year.

Man You can do scads of things with that degree. Sometimes they just want to know you made it through college. You can do almost anything as long as you have a degree.

But here is what you can do with a teaching degree:

After school programs
Start your own daycare, and be the administrator
Camp administration/teaching
Almost every industry has room for educators
Substitute teacher
Christian school administration/teacher/tutor
Alternative educational settings
Jails/youth facilities
Rec centers
Hospitals
Government agencies
Test prep tutoring
Add a few psyche classes and you could be a school counselor

I worked as a Museum Educator
I also worked as a school-paid tutor
I worked in the Title 1 program tutoring kids one on one taking them out of their classrooms for a half hour at a time

The list can go on and on.

Tricia, I just wanted to tell you that I REALLY admire you for going back to school. I'm only taking two classes this term, and I'm feeling overwhelmed by some of the homework. And it's also been difficult getting back into the studying and classroom stuff since I've been out of school for a number of years. You've been away from it even longer than I have, so my hat is off to you!!

Wow, I have been lucky this semester as far as to having to buy books
3 different people have given me or lending me their books. Leaving me to buy one book and a math lab code. I just got a message on FB from another friend from school. She has an unused Math Lab code she said I can Have. So now only have to buy one book :)
