Title: Stuffy noses
Post by: SippinTea on January 27, 2009, 07:47:17 PM
What's your favorite home remedy for a stuffy nose? Because of all the pressure in my head I've been getting bad headaches, and now my ears are hurting too. Ick.

I've been trying the old hold-a-hot-washcloth-over-your-nose trick, but it's only momentary relief.

Any better ideas?

Whenever I have that, a lot of times, I will put a heating pad over my sinuses which is similar to the hot wash cloth but lasts longer.

You could also try eating something spicy like jalapenos if it is a sinus headache or hot soup could make you feel a little better.

I really really long hot shower, and then AS SOON as you step out, blow your nose as much as you can, until there is NOTHING left.

That usually helps for me, and it works for a few hours.

It also helps my nosebleeds.

Been doing that too, Mel. This seems to be beyond that point. :-\

The heating pad trick I've never heard before. Might give it a shot. And usually I don't like spicy food, but in this case... lol...

*goes to look for salsa*

OH! Sister Mom used to eat the hot and sour soup from the Chinese place. She said that helped when she was feeling sick...I dont even LIKE that kind of soup, so I didnt ever try it, but you might wanna try it if you like it.

Well, if it's beyond the hot shower thing, my trick probably won't work.  I usually make some strong mint tea and just sniff it!  lol  I'll breathe the steam and hold the cup, and when it gets beyond the steam phase, I dump it out and re-use the bag witih more boiling water.

Also good for stuffy nose is a little tiny bit of vapor rub on the tip of your nose.

The spicy thing only lasts as long as you're eating it. It comes back right away.

Got any Vicks or mentholatum?  Rub a little dab under your nose. Cold pills really DO work. Sometimes you need to take three instead of two, though, but I'm speaking as someone who takes them for allergies when there's nothing else around.

I know it's probably too late to help, but a drug rep told me about this and it's WONDERFUL!!!!!

get a neilmed sinus rinse kit.  it's a bottle with packets of saline solution to put in it.  it rinses out your sinuses.  I think you can use it twice a day.......and follow the instructions carefully!!!  I think it works wonders.  It is over the counter and costs maybe around 10 dollars or so............
it does feel a bit weird at first, but it really helps!!

hmmmm....mine didn't burn..........but the directions say not to use plain tap water (without the packet) because that would burn.

my husband and sister have used them and neither of them complained of burning...... hmmm

I don't know how effective this is, but it's worth a shot...I dunno if you guys have Vicks vapour rub over there...but a teaspoon or a bit more of that stuff in a large bowlful of boiling water and lean over than with a towel over your head...the vapour steam should help to clear the congestion...and if your nose drips...it's going in the bowl anyway. If you think the steam's too hot go in intervals with the towel over your head and over the bowl....or wait until it cools a bit...but the vapour steam's the important bit.
