www.sparkpeople.com

It's TOTALLY FREE to join, and it has helped me UNBELIEVABLY!  It encourages you to start small and realize that weight loss isn't a quick thing, and that there is preparation involved.  I took two weeks or so just getting acclimated to the site and using only the nutrition tracker.
The thing that has helped me the most is the nutrition tracker.  It's been AWESOME!  For the LONGEST time, I tried to keep track of my calories, etc, and ended up just feeling overwhelmed.  I thought about joining weight watchers again just to be able to log my caloric intake on their website, but then I found sparkpeople.  I've been on there about 35 days and lost 14 pounds.  It feels WONDERFUL.  There are people on discussion boards with tickers showing their weight loss, and some of them have lost well over 100 pounds.

My thoughts since joining and starting things in earnest include:

Between meal SNACKING: it's NOT evil!
I eat a small portion of fruit or a small granola bar between each meal.  One day when I didn't, I totally lost it at lunch time and ate weird things and lots of them.

Food: it's NOT the enemy
Having food in the house is not the problem.  It's how much of it you eat that is the problem.  *sigh*  I used to purge my house and throw away all the junk food and feel so proud of myself.  Then I'd go to the mall and buy 5 Mrs. Field's cookies (the big ones) and eat them all in two days or less.  Now I have a box of Mrs. Fields ice cream sandwich cookies in my freezer, and I have one about once a week or so, but it's listed on my nutrition tracker, and it fits in my calorie and carb range for the day.

Water: Your body needs it!
8 to 12 glasses a day for weight loss.  I count 4 full bottles a day.  Sometimes even more.

Motivation and support: an absolute MUST
Find your personal (POSITIVE)  motivators and keep them in front of you often (I have pulled out one of my favorite skirts that I REALLY want to fit in again and hung it on my shower rod so I see it every time I get on the scales or brush my teeth).

I'll post more thoughts later.  The main thing for me was that I KNEW what I needed to do and how to eat, but I got REALLY overwhelmed when I tried to do it all at once.  The sparkpeople program helped me take things one step at a time.  For instance: this week's email is an encouragement to drink more water.  Another week it talked about portion control and how to manage it.  It even talks about how to help organize yourself in order to be better equipped to handle all the changes necessary to be successful.

1)  Injest tape worms.  They do just that in some parts of the world

2)  Loose weight.  How loose do you wanna get?

3)  Upon reaching desired weight loss go to doctor and get prescription to get rid of tape worms.  And explain how you got them

some tips my mom has from her experience in weight loss

1)  no foods should be put on a list of "can't eat" unless your actually allergic to it.  The things on the can't eat list are the very things you'll crave and you'll eat half the refrigerator trying to stay away from that food.  Your much better off to eat a little of the junk food you crave and get it over with.

2)  use portion control.  For example if your going to eat ice cream dip some out on top a cone or in a small cup instead of heaping it up in a big bowl.  sometimes the container you serve it in/on helps limit the portion.

3)  measure every area of your body before you start the attempt to loose weight:  upper arms, lower arms, upper legs, lower legs, bottom, waist, and  bustline.  Write it down in a notebook with the measurment of each area and the date you measured them and how much you weighed..  Then as you begin to loose weight  measure those areas again from time to time.  Be sure to write it down every time you measure those areas along with how much you weighed at the time.  You'll begin to notice patterns of how many inches in an area to how many lbs you loose.

4)  Choose things with fitted waist bands instead of drawstring waistbands.  If the skirt can be a size 18 or a size 28 you'll end up at size 28.  On the other hand if you've got a fitted waist band and it starts feeling snug your more likely to want to keep  the weight off.

Great tips, Tia!  I've been incorporating most of them lately!

I put a box of 100 calorie Hershey bars in my cabinet and a box of ice cream sandwich cookies (Mrs. Fields brand) in my freezer.  When I want something sweet, I add it to the nutrition tracker and cut back on something else that day (sometimes by drinking only water at meal times instead of my fruit juices or soda).  Now that I've been doing this for a little over a month, the chocolate doesn't taste as appealing as it once did!  :o

Portion control was a fun one.  I started buying 8 ounce cans of Sierra Mist instead of the 12 ounce ones (I hate diet sodas).  Now I'm considering going to the 16 ounce bottles, since I seem to have mastered the measuring part and am sticking to it.  As a matter of fact, if I want a drink of soda, I often only drink 4 ounces, pouring it into a really cute (nearly 6 ounce) coca-cola glass that I keep in the freezer.  The iced effect makes the soda feel more like a "treat" instead of just a sip.  And the glass is nearly full, even with only 4 ounces in it.  :-)

The sparkpeople site has a place where you can weigh and measure yourself, and it allows you to track your progress, and it makes charts and graphs to show you how far you've come.

I have two really cool non-elastic skirts - one khaki and one denim - that I could wear about a year or so ago.  Problem was that I kept all my other clothes, so I went back to them eventually.  Now I have boxed up all of my old clothes, and the only things in my wardrobe are things that fit NOW or will fit in the future when I reach my goals.  At this point, I have a dress, skirt, or some item of clothing for each size that I plan to hit on the way down the ladder.

I'm so excited that I'm going to be able to wear my khaki skirt in time for my vacation!

If it is in your budget, join Weight Watchers.  I did and it has worked wonders for me!

I am not sure if it is mentioned above or not, but journaling is a good tool.  Write down everything that you put into your mouth from drinks to gum to foods.  It will make you more aware of all that you are consuming and show what needs to be cut down/out.

I think that I had an account with them a long time ago, before WW, but never used it a lot.

For me the accountability (with the weekly/now monthly weigh-ins) and getting to talk with real people about things helps me the most.

This is just the topic I was looking for.

Have any of you tried the Slim Fast diet?  I have a friend who went on it and lost 20 lbs in about 2 months i think he said.  I've thought about trying it to lose just a little weight.  I want my swim suit body back.  But i've read a lot of bad things about Slim Fast...so if anyone has  done it and it has worked or hasn't, I would love to hear it.

I was doing Weight Watchers for a little while, but I got so tired of measuring and counting and keeping up with points.  It drove me insane.  I was walking anywhere from a mile to 3 miles a day, but after having a falling out with my walking buddy, I've gained nearly everything back that i've lost.  I've taken diet pills and will never ever again do that.  I got crazy.  I wasn't sleeping, just doing the most intense house cleaning ever.

I'm not exactly looking for a quick fix.  I know whatever I chose, I have to stick to.  But I need something that is easy to work with.

Slim fast is full of sugar. You can find something else to drink for lunch that isn't as high! It's also really expensive. Instant Breakfast by Carnation is the exact same thing but much cheaper.

That is AWESOME, TL!!!
**HUGS**

As to emotional eating...
Well, the other night a guy that I'm not even interested in insulted me indirectly.  I got aggravated.  Unfortunately, there was junk food in the house.  Ugh.  It wasn't there for long!  lol
Emotional eating doesn't make you insane.  It's the beating yourself up over it part that does.
Get back in gear, though.  It's not the end of the world OR the diet!

I almost got slim fast quite some time ago, but fortunately I read the ingredients first.  It has one of the artificial sweeteners in it that gives me migraine headaches.  Glad I didn't get it and start drinking it!

talk about emotional eater..ok..I confess I am the world's biggest offender here...I do it weather I am happy, sad, depressed, or mad..I am hoping that now that I realize it..I can start a diet plan after the baby comes...I really have success with weight watchers when I do it correctly

I now have doctor's orders to lose weight.  I have to go back in 6 months so she can see how much I've lost.  The two things she told me to lay off of are salty foods (I never add salt to anything anyway) and fried foods (ok..THIS is where I'll have difficulties).  A lot of what I like is/was fried at some point in time during it's preparation.  Oh well.  Guess it's time to explore new foods.

As soon as I'm financially able, I'm rejoining Weight Watchers again.  Hopefully around Christmas.  I know the program works...IF you work it correctly.  You have to have the WANT to make it happen.

I don't cheat.
lol
Mainly cuz I'm not on a diet.  :-)
I'm just trying to make changes in my life and make 'em STICK.
A diet is something you "start" and "stop" and therefore can "quit."
A lifestyle is something that allows you to just realize that every day won't be perfect.  If you "mess up" you just get up and realize that you won't eat chocolate very often, but it's okay to have it once in awhile.
Just my :twocents:

Post by: BeccaBoo on October 16, 2008, 07:59:05 AM
Well, I do the points system.

And if I eat over my points I call that cheating.

We actually have a "cheat day" for all 3 of us. (Mom, sis, me)

I am not big on chocolate.

I have a weakness for CHEESE!!

YUMMY!!

And thanks for your 2 cents worth.

I have been eating right and I am can tell it doesnt take near as much to fill me up now.

I used to go back for 2nds and 3rds...now I eat a plateful or 3/4 a plate and I am done.

:)

But about 2 hours later I am hungry again.

So I eat a small snack and that helps until I eat the rest of my points for the day.

;)

I did learn somthing interesting at the health fair last Sat. They had a class talking about your metabolism, Most people think that people who are skinny have a higher metabolism but uts the opposite, The smaller you are the less calories your body burns to keep it alive and the bigger you are the more it takes and thus bigger people have a higher metobalic rate.
They did a test that told you your rate (the amount of calories your body will burn in a 24 hour period if you sat around and did nothing lol.) Mine was 2,250 calories. They say you are supposed to base a diet on that rate. If you eat less than that in a day you will loose. But you have to remember that as you loose that rate goes down

One other thing I learned was that for every 4 to 5 pounds you gain, 1 pound is bone denisity and muscle as your body does that to support the extra weight. So in return as you loose you will also loose that extra bone and muscle as you loose
Title: Re: Weight loss tips
Post by: Sis on October 25, 2008, 01:50:04 AM
That can depend on the person. Some DO have a high metabolism. They eat a lot but don't gain an ounce. They are usually high energy, too.

TL anything with sugar alcohol (sorbitol) in it to keep the sugar content down will do that. It's because the sugar alcohol goes through your system so fast it doesn't have an effect on your blood sugar. Buy it makes other things fast, too.   :laughhard:

Everybody has an answer.  Everybody can tell you how to lose weight.  But they disagree so much.  I have found both low fat and low carb diets work.  What else I find is it is a lot easier to talk about losing weight than it is to lose it.

That's awesome Tricia!! Good for you! You go girl!!!  :clap2:  :clap2:

That was my two favorite things to do when I used to go to the gym. I just wanted to get the weight off and be fit, I didn't care about building muscles. I need to start walking again..... when the weather warms up.

Everybody has an answer.  Everybody can tell you how to lose weight.  But they disagree so much.  I have found both low fat and low carb diets work.  What else I find is it is a lot easier to talk about losing weight than it is to lose it.

But you can starve yourself and lose weight. Remember, the goal shouldn't just be to lose, but to get healthy.

Low fat was  "talked about" in the 50's but really pushed in the 70's & 80's. But this experiment has failed. We have fatter kids. Kids who are becoming (adult onset) diabetic. They are not getting the proper nutrients and eating the wrong things and are the fattest generation of kids ever. The oldest diets on record are from the 1800's. There may have been others but the ones professionals have gone by are written records. They all talked about cutting down on starches to lose weight. Not cutting them out but not eating so much of them.

Think about it. Carbohydrates turn into sugar. The process starts when it is in the mouth. Saliva starts the breakdown of starches to sugar. So if you eat refined sugars and a lot of carbohydrates it's a lot of sugar. Now, how healthy can you be if you injest that much sugar? Just food for thought.  (pun intended - LOL)

That is my problem for sure..but I have really got to do something to get healthy. I have not liked being overwieght all my life, but then since I have been pregnant and gained baby weight on top of being over weight it as really made me feel worse.  I don't want to be a skinny model, I just want to get healthy and not die of a heart attack or something else before my little boy turns five..that is my fear..I want to be able to run and play with him, and be a fun part of his life..not a mom that gets tired just walking up some stairs..or a couple of miles...makes me sad, but I am determined that once he gets here..I am going to get healthy for myself and for my family.

With any size the goal should be staying healthy, not so much worrying about the number on the scale.

Another loose weight/stay healthy tip that I'm in the process of acting on myself- get a pair of shoes that fits well and are comfortable.  If your shoes hurt your feet, your not real likely to get out and excercise.

I actually do NOT like coconut, but if you cook them well enough, it doesn't even taste like coconut!  It's amazing!  And I made them once with about half the coconut, and it was awesome!  I've thought several times about putting in crushed walnuts in place of the coconut.  I think it would work.

lol  They're SCARY, aren't they?!?!
Especially if they're browned just a little bit more than you'd think they should be.
UGH.  I can't believe how few of the whole batch I have on the plate to take to the church tomorrow.  Thankfully, I have a double batch of brownies to supplement.

Went to the Dr today. Saw the nutritionist there. She told me that since November I have lost 18 lbs. But she also told me that at my last check up, my BP was elivated (Which I knew cause they put me on a BP med then) and also my Blood Sugar was slightly elevated, Not enough to have to take anything but she pretty much told me if I dont start  watching what I eat I will be soon.
Whats odd is November and December I really wasnt trying to loose weight but rather being the holidays my goal was just to not gain and yet they said I have lost lol

I feel the exact same way.  I have an 18 month old, and I have a hard time playing with her on the floor and getting up fast enough to catch her if she runs away.  I have got to get healthy so that I can be here for my baby girl.  We also want more children, but I need to be healthy before we plan on having another baby.  I don't want to have a high-risk pregnancy again.

Since before Thanksgiving, I have been going to Weight Watchers, and the holidays have de-railed me, but I'm shaking it off and going full force again.  I tried SparkPeople, and a version of that sight for expectant mothers as well, but for me, I HAVE to have the accountability of weighing in front of someone else, and talking to others in a meeting.  I have tried to manage food better on my own, but I need the structure of WW.  My husband tries to support me, but he has never had to worry about his weight(5'9", 125-130lbs), so he doesn't understand that there is a REASON that I can't have the big bowl of ice cream with chocolate sauce. *sigh*
