How do you define a gentleman ladies? And men, how do you define a lady?
Nai
QuoteHow do you define a gentleman ladies? And men, how do you define a lady?
Heh.
I have no frame of reference with which to define a "lady", as I am a man.
I can tell you a lot about myself, and some small generalizations about men - but who knows about women?
Women, that's who.
LOL
We might gain a little more insight by asking the women to define "lady" and the men to define "gentleman"...but I digress.
IM very limited O, a "lady" is a female so accomplished in the subtle arts she needs never lift a finger for anything, yet is more than adequately skilled in whatever fields she wishes - and takes sweet care not to injure the delicate egos of the boy-children wishing to monopolize her time and smiles, even when setting boundaries.
She is well-versed in dignity, never pompous or overbearing - for she knows one sweet word will get her 20 times more effort than 100 harsh nagging or sharply criticizing ones.
She understands her divinely ordained place in the universe - the lesser light to
rule the night, and understands that the absolute power given her by God Almighty in that regard should never be traded away in competition with men for paltry monetary gain.
After all, what sort of sissy man would wish to marry or even be around his competition for daily bread?
:o Then obviously, by that definition, I'm not a lady.
:beret:
um, yeah, i guess a broad i'll ever be if that's how high the bar is.
really? that's how a guy sees a lady?
Definition of a lady?
*AB sits demurely, knees together with ankles crossed and with good posture, smiles serenely, blinks ever so innocently and says "Me."*
:teeth:
:biglaugh:
I don't have a clue about Tsalagi's definition.
But I do that that some things that make a woman a lady is one who can work hard while still maintaining her dignity and femininity. A woman who has a high standard for herself, but is meek, so as to be an encouragement and example for other younger ladies instead of condecending.
I also think a lady has strong statements but doesn't necessarily use many words. I think a real lady understands she is not lesser than man, and that her influence is very imperative to most if not all things. Feminine touches travel a long ways before an end result of something occurs. To the supporting of her husband, prayers for her world, to the tenderness she uses when raising the sons (and daughters of course) that will grow up to do great things.
I don't know maybe ALL the things a lady is, because I'm still learning to be a real lady in Jesus.
A real gentleman? I don't know, I don't know that I've really met many. I think my husband is a gentleman, but the best way for me to describe that is in the very word itself, gentle-man. All the intellect, and compassion, as a Godly person, but inset in the very best traits of masculinity.
I also don't know that many, if any, people can truly be ladies and gentlemen without striving for Godliness. Mens' masclunity suffers greatly outside of God and women too lack the ability to grasp a true "picture" of what a lady is. But that's just IMO, since that's what was asked for.

Ah. I prefer "chicks". Ladies require "gentlemen" and I'm afraid I'm rather a rascally rogue. :hypocrite:
I also said at the beginning of my first post here:
QuoteI have no frame of reference with which to define a "lady", as I am a man.
I can tell you a lot about myself, and some small generalizations about men - but who knows about women?
Women, that's who.
Quotereally? that's how a guy sees a lady?
"
a guy". Yes. "
A" guy cannot speak for the rest of the male half of Man, and has already acknowledged his complete lack of discernment insofar as the female half goes - but "a" guy doesn't hold the bar...
...if it's any consolation, "gentleman" is pretty much as beyond the reach of most men as well, myself included.
QuoteI think a real lady understands she is not lesser than man
Certainly not in value or function. Most of the time, she is smaller in her physical structure. Biblical parallel holds true -
her function and
his function differ. If anyone thought I was saying females are inferior [I don't think you guys think I was saying that, but *forum disclaimer* lol], please take into account the importance of the moon. Without it, earth would be chaos.
Further, the day and night are equal in length. Co-equal rulership in time-share allotments lol
The Sun and the Moon in simile are the mother and father providing for the earth [children of man] Adam, made out of the dirt - in much the same way that man and woman are to care for their children, also brought from the [dirt].
I'm not saying I'm a filthy pagan sinner either, just that I think true nobility [***as an ideal***] is beyond my reach, and as Mel said, obviously:
QuoteI also don't know that many, if any, people can truly be ladies and gentlemen without striving for Godliness.
[emphasis mine]
I heartily concur!
That which in the world cannot be naturally achieved, is achieved when Jesus is alive in us. Of course, then it's called righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost, but again...i digress
lol

I certainly think you very ladylike. As well as all the delightful ladies of GP. :great:
I actually appreciate a woman who is tom-boyish, meaning not afraid to get their hands dirty doing things that most women would not even be interested in. As an example, two Christmas's ago I bought my wife a mega-powertools pack from Home Depot. She loved it and uses it almost every week for something...... In fact, before we met she helped build her dads Produce stand. She is NOT interested in scrap-booking, hates cloths shopping, or talking "kids" with other women.
Actually, she is very lady-like to me. :)
*laugh* Somehow I think your wife and I might get along well. *grin*
:beret:
You might! We both got married late in life and before that, she always did stuff by herself including camping and cross country trips (she does have friends but many of them are of the above mentioned "kids" and scrap-booking variety). She pines away for the motorcycle (A Honda Rebel) that she once owned. I don't know how comfortable "I" am with her riding it, but she loves them.
*big grin* When can I meet her? LOL
I love backpacking and cross country trips, and I've hoped to buy a Vespa someday and tour Italy. And in my younger days I helped my Dad re-roof our house, and other similarly 'un-girlie' things. *grin*
Granted, I've got a rather 'girlie' side to me, too....(I like making homemade cards, and tatting, and cooking, etc)...but more often than not, my tom-boy side comes out even in those things. LOL
And I'm totally :offtopic: again!! Oops!

nothing unlady-like in working hard. If men can be chefs and it not be efiminate, which I don't they are, then ladies can construct. I was the oldest of 3 girls, mowed the lawn and cooked the meals at age 12. If anything, those things keep a woman well rounded so as not to be so frail that she shatters at the thought of sweat, splinters, or clipping her nails short to keep them cleaner. I don't think it's in the activities but in the the demeanor that their done. I just don't carry myself like a guy, in whatever task.
We have to keep in mind that God made women sturdy. We are capable of bearing children! That is no dainty matter!

lady doesn't mean prissy princess
a lady is a woman of strength, character and humility with feminine grace
I enjoy cooking, decorating, keeping house, caring for and nuturing children, mending, shoes, laundry, shopping (if its bargain hunting), talking, I even partake in some primping sometimes (all of buffing my nails, brushing my hair and throwing in a teeth bleaching tray LOL), one of my not-a-secret-now dreams is to learn how to dance  , being supportive, encouraging and uplifting, being a "mother-hen" and taking up for the underdog and defending fairness, being dependable and steady - a solid rock my friends and family can count on.
I can also appreciate a motorcycle ride, a four wheel drive and a bunch of mud, going hiking, yard work, fixing my car (or fixing anything really LOL), figuring out machinery or gadgets, getting out the tool belt and doing carpentry in the workshop, bad jokes, good jokes, some good old cutting put-downs, burping contests (only in the right company), bending the rules, occasionally throwing responsibilities to the wind and just living in the moment, adventures and trying new experiences. All done while dressed and behaving as a feminine woman
I'm self sufficient - I like financial stability but I don't expect it to fall to a man to provide that for me. I'm independent only as to not be a slacker or a burden to anyone - but I'm not above asking for help or allowing someone to help me. I don't think I'm better than a man (certain ones, yes of course but as a whole no hehe)
"Being a lady" or being any person of note I think is a general maturity in who you are (if you're a woman, be a woman. if you're a man, be a man) knowing yourself and how to control yourself, developing what your skills are, not comparing or ranking them against others and be respectful and gracious to others as well as yourself
I think a lady can be and do lots of things - its not a narrow category of prim and prissy pampered girls in luxurious settings
lady doesn't mean a frail girl child that has to be protected and pampered (note the "has to be") ladies will appreciate and love gentlemen (or rascally rogues) that protect and pamper them but a lady will also know that sometimes she will have to put aside her whims and fancies and will need to protect and support him
uh oh... I think this post went past two cents... sorry! stopping now! LOL
QuoteI was the oldest of 3 girls, mowed the lawn and cooked the meals at age 12. If anything, those things keep a woman well rounded
Just another way men and women are opposites. Mowing the lawn helps keep me from being a well-rounded person. :-?

(which incidentally ended in an accident... but thats another story... lol) I also hope to buy a scooter/bike... but not the putt putt ones... The scooter i want is a Honda Rebel something to another 250cc thing... which is small enough for me to handle it, but big enough to still go... and i love cooking, and i can sew, but when i do... just like you... my tom-boyish side comes out again! lol. I sew camo stuff instead of the frilly or something like that! Anyways... i understand this post! just wanted to let you know! And then there was AB's post after that... dude... Eve: What?
Troy: He thinks I'm a gentleman and you're a lady.
Eve: [disgusted] Well, consider the source! I don't even know what a lady is.
Troy: I know, I mean I thought a "gentleman" was somebody that owned horses. But it turns out, his short and simple definition of a lady or a gentleman is, someone who always tries to make sure the people around him or her are as comfortable as possible.
Eve: Where do you think he got all that information?
Troy: From the oddest place - his parents. I mean, I don't think I got that memo from mine.

I don't like getting dirty, I don't like riding motorbikes, I don't like backpacking or camping in tents or anywhere where there's no bathroom with a shower, I've never helped with house maintenance, mowing grass or otherwise, I insist that the male members of the household take out the garbage, I don't like lifting things or going into the dusty attic.
Although; I don't like gardening, I can't really cook, I can't make clothes or anything really to do with that, I've never tried scrapbooking, and I have a mild panic attack when holding a newborn.

I haven't gone back to double check, so far I think we're okay but I want a stop put to this before it gets dicey LOL
Well hey, since I never posted on this in the past, I will put my two cents in.
A gentleman and lady are identified by the way they treat others and expect to be treated.
A Lady even well mowing the yard (for those of you who do that) still expects to be treated with respect and honor. Where as a female in the finest of situations tries to act like a person in a crowd. A lady will accept a man standing when she enters a room (I know a old tradition) well a female will get mad at him. A lady would expect a gentleman to offer her his seat, although she may decline politely if she does not want to sit, on a crowded bus but a female would get mad that he offered.
A gentleman treats a lady as a lady. We would fight if necessary someone that is being offensive or harassing the ladies in or around our lives.
I guess that is the answer I will give for now.
Oh and there is nothing wrong with a lady that can be a tom boy at times, as long as she can be a lady at times as well. Balance is a great thing.
Not bad, Jon. You should get a passing grade for that one. *grin*

We had some times like that in my high school, as well. Awesome times to be part of for sure! I remember lunch time being a great time of prayer for our high school on several occasions. When there would be a church fasting day there would be many students in the sanctuary together. Wow. Hadn't thought about those times in a long time!
