The Drummers Unite! thread was such a hit, here on Godplace, that we reached 28 pages full of totally healthy information and fun! Drummers and non-drummers are welcome to jump into the conversation. The reason we reached 28 pages is because drummers and the people who love them are awesome people. Join me and other fantastic drummers as we discuss the world from a truly unique perspective.
Okay - here's the next thread. What's left to say?!?! OF COURSE....
DRUMMERS UNITE !!!
i, for one, would like to publicly say that some of my best friends are drummers.
:thumbsup2: go widrummer! :thumbsup2:
wow... the uniting continues!
I just love that new thread smell
*sniffs loudly*
I wondered what that was :o
Post some great drummer links.
Here's one:
www.moderndrummer.com (http://www.moderndrummer.com)
that reminds me . .. last year for Christmas i ordered moderndrummer for widrummer as a gift. so . . i thought it appropriate to put the "from" as mom.
so? all year long i have gotten a variety of percussion magazines addressed to . . . MOM!!
:laughhard:
doncha wonder what the mailman thinks?
sorry. didn't mean to get :offtopic: just tough for me to focus these days.
Here's a cool site with tons of drumming videos and inspiration:

I'm a non-drummer, but I need drumming help...
Know of a DVD or other resource that my church drummer could study at home? He can keep a solid beat (which is better than the last one did!) but I'd love to offer him something to keep learning with. Regular lessons seem to be out for him right now. Any suggestions?
trav? aren't you listening? that's not like you. . .
dave weckl is very good and has a couple of dvds
carter beauford is also very good and has one good one
there is an apostolic one - i think still in production - by eli hernandez
trav should have more ideas, though, since he is the local drummer boy!
oh, by the way, those are dvds that i have bought for my son and other drummers that they liked. so . . . that's why i would recommend them.
Thanks, Kris! Not being a drummer, I had no idea where to start to find a good resource. Much appreciated!
:beret:
having a son who is a drummer . . . and not a LOT of money for lessons (or interest) . . . videos are good. go to amazon.com and check the dave weckl stuff - the dvds might be old, but they are good, according to widrummer.
trav? you out there, yet? i know you know WAY more than the average drummermom about drum videos . . .
My brother has some... I'll have to tell him to get on here and post
I went to a really fun event tonight! It was a drum festival put on by my brother's drumming instructor - about 20+ of his students, all different skill levels.. they mostly played with tracks but there was also a garage band, our band, and then some that just showed off different techniques
we were kinda like the headline group and opened and closed for it - it was really rockin! LOL
They had both my brother's set and his teacher's set out there so there were several drum duets - very loud but very fun to listen to lol
It was definitely a uniting of drummers LOL I even thought of this thread while I was there :thumbsup2:
Nice! Did you get any video/audio clips?

Since there are a few non-drummers who are regular posters, let me ask you a question.
Have you ever tried to learn how to play drums? Is there anythign that you like about drums?
i don't play and think i would be too easily distracted by all the other sounds around me to be able to play.
i love the sound, the excitement, the feeling that comes with drums . . . the continuity . . . but i like it even more when a drummer uses a lot of variation in their sound. i am thinking of a Phil Collins song (after Genesis) where it feels as if the beat is going to be off, but it isn't . . . he waits until the last possible nanosecond to hit .. . but it's always perfectly timed. know what i mean? i think the song is called Edge of Night or something like that. love the drums on that song. . .

Yes... but I hit them at the wrong time and my little brother was better than me soooooooo he continued with the lessons and my parents cycled me through a bunch of other instruments and lessons :-\ :biglaugh:
I should try playing them again, see if I'm any better with my coordination and keeping a beat now :biglaugh:

I always thought those were called duels, not duets. :smirk2:
Duet
Music
A composition for two voices or two instruments.
A group of two singers or two instrumentalists.
duet : noun
two items of the same kind
two performers or singers who perform together
Duel
A prearranged, formal combat between two persons, usually fought to settle a point of honor.
A struggle for domination between two contending persons, groups, or ideas.
duel
a prearranged combat between two persons, fought with deadly weapons according to an accepted code of procedure, esp. to settle a private quarrel.
any contest between two persons or parties.
hmmm they were playing together, had pre-arranged parts to compliment each other's playing and they were not competing........ you tell me

I know right? :-\ I lost count of how many times the little show off twirled his sticks or did something showy... I can barely stand there without feeling like I'm about to faint and my throat is always so dry I feel like I'm croaking... and he's over there cool as a cucumber showing off and and showing off well!!! anytime I try to show off I mess up LOL I don't have that "kodak courage"
I'm proud of him though... you can see why they thought he should get the drum lessons... whoda thunk that 6yr old boy that could barely clap would turn out so well 11 years later LOL
I've never really tried to play a drumset, other than sitting down with a drummer and going 'ok, so what's THIS one called?' and beating on the drums a bit. But still - I think they add SO much to a song - most importantly, a beat to go by. Singers and musicians get so used to relying on the drums that they have a hard time singing without them. *grin*
I have a drumset and brushes (some sticks too)...would like to be able to 'swish' along with the best of 'em, but that is unlikely to ever happen. The one thing I've learned to do is cross stick on the snare, while doing 8ths with a shaker in the other hand. If I can just add in the bass part with my foot, then I'll be able to bossa nova just a little.
But it does sound ok with just the snare and shaker.
I've played drums a few times here and there - enough to know that I could probably be a decent drummer if I put in the time practicing.
But I don't want to all that much. I like singing and making melodies. :)
the secret is out.
the success of rock music is due entirely to the oft-forgetten cowbell.
....and I quote...
Quote
Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keys. The foundation of rock music. Occasionally strings are used to give a lush, orchestral feel. But we all know when a song needs that extra oomph, that extra push over the top, there's only one thing that will satisfy: The Cowbell.
It's the cymbal's evil third cousin. It's the dark ring that pounds in the back of your brain and lets you know, it's time to rock. The cowbell is an instrument that can't be overused. It should never be underused. Many great rock and roll songs are perfect because the cowbell is used just right.

along with a good healthy diet and plenty of exercise... listening to a cowbell can help you lose weight!

Usually, if there's a cowbell mounted ot the drumset you are one of three things:
1. influenced by an 80's rock drummer
2. a latin player
3. a young guy who thinks more is ...more
do you have a cowbell mounted on your set, trav? at church? at home?
no.
hhmmm. really? i'm surprised. i thought you might just for fun.
i don't remember if J had one at elim . . he doesn't on his set at home and i'm sure it's not allowed at his church. the drummer at the church here is pretty mellow - and older. i'd be surprised if he had any cowbell influence in his music. very surprised.
personally, i think any sound can add to the mix if played right.

Yeah, they're probably the one's who think the 80's were really cool. The era you were born in, not grew up in, usually seems cooler for some reason. I know quite a few teenagers who think the 80's bands are so cool - like Guns N Roses, etc.

i thought i posted this before, but i don't see it . . .tommy lee is yucky. i don't know, honestly, that i've ever consciously listened to him play and i know he's supposed to be quite good and he's suppose to be FAB in concert, but . .. he's just yucky. i skimmed through several pages of his autobiography and he's disgusting. he's like the slimeball punks i hung out with as a teeny bopper that all eventually spent time in prison for violent crimes. he's just yucky.

Newsboys - Peter Furler
Genesis - Phil Collins
Lenny Kravitz (plays drums on his own albums)
Stevie Wonder
Who else?
Stevie Wonder? really . .hmmm . . that's interesting. i didn't realize he played drums. i'm impressed.
phil colins is the only one i came up with . . . if i recall correctly . . . he played drums and sang when he was with Genesis before being on his own, right? he was very, very good.

Yeah, backup doesn't count. I'm thinking of lead singers who were former drummers. Basically, drummers who have come into the spotlight as lead singers.
Big name here:
Mel Tormé
(Melvin Howard Tormé) I just knew he was a singer, but recently discovered he was a drummer too.
what about peter cris? or did he only sing beth?
(shows how much of a kiss fan i am, hey? maybe i should call tina . . she'd know!!)
Peter Criss did put out his own album. So kudos for him.
i think i remember that. didn't each of them put out their own at some point? obviously made a huge impression on me.
so . . . waiting to hear from all youse guys about christian drummers who sing. not so much? there must be some!
I think the lead singer from Salvador also plays drums...or at least used to.

Unlike other musician groups, such as guitarists or keyboardists, the drummer community is willing and happy to accept all musicians who want to be part of the drummer's world - which is something good (even if you're not a drummer). Non-drummers can appreciate drummers and drummers appreciate other musicians who appreciate them. So to answer your question: Yes.

Thought so.

Wait a minute, Trav, I need to make sure I understand...
It's Drummers Unite, but keyboardists, singers, drummer fans, guitarists, and non-musicians are all part of this gang?
lol
:beret:
Unlike other musician groups, such as guitarists or keyboardists, the drummer community is willing and happy to accept all musicians who want to be part of the drummer's world - which is something good (even if you're not a drummer). Non-drummers can appreciate drummers and drummers appreciate other musicians who appreciate them. So to answer your question: Yes.
But the question is do they appreciate other musicians who don't appreciate them?

Any good musician appreciates a good drummer. If a musician doesn't appreciate good drummers, then they're a .........looozer. Any other questions?
Yeah, kinda :offtopic:
Do you play guitar at all?

Welcome to the Mutual Appreciation Society.
This meeting will come to order...or disorder, which ever is more fun.
Disorder seems to be the order of the day
BTW I 'm so exited about getting my very own guitar to start practicing with!
I was using my dad's old acustic but the fretboard was too wide for my hands so he took me out to get a smaller electric.
I picked up a "squire" by fender. I don't particularly like the color(a light creamy dijon color) but that's not important.
I love practicing on it :clap2:

Rock on!
i think an orderly disorder is the world most drummers are accustomed to. don't you?
of course, i'm only an audience participant, so i'm only guessing.
I AM :cooltalk: A FAN :guitar: OF THE :BAND.

what??!?!
orderly disorder . . . picture Animal from the Muppets.
yep. that's a classic drummer if you ask me. :waving:
CR, could you explain to our drummer friend what we are talking about. he's a little confused since coming back from that concert in the City the other night.
The only disorderly orderly I know is Jerry Lewis.
You guys know that Trav is a very analytical drummer... he loves it because of the precise mathematical breakdowns. 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/3, etc All the faces he makes are because of his intense calculations.
Also, his favorite book of the Bible is Numbers. :)
2-shay 2 my number 1 fan.
:waving: Hey, Istanbul...what's up?
not super lots of stuff really. interview tomorrow! (2-27)
/sigh... i don't get to drum often enough... that's what comes from living in an apartment.
:waving: hey taye! go look at the hugs thread . . . good to see you. tell your sister she's missed here, too! :waving:
Going to see Steve Smith & Vital Information in Manhattan this Saturday.
Went to see Terry Lynne Carrington & the Berklee Jazz Ensemble tonight at the Blue Note iin Manhattan. Pretty cool. Pretty cool.
There are never any concerts up here :sadbounce:
I bet there are. What are you into?
Sounds like Trav is seeing some cool shows...
Ever heard of these guys?

Have you ever been out to see Les Paul at The Iridium?
funny les paul story . . i was with some musician types and took them to Solid Gold McDonald's in Milwaukee. they have a LOT of music collectibles - including a Les Paul guitar with a statue of Les Paul playing the guitar. one of the musicians was like, "whose that?" :laughhard:
um. yeah. it was pretty funny. guess you had to be there.
sorry. i know. :offtopic: :pwink:

I'm actually planning to go see him in about two weeks or so with a group of musicians. I feel like I'm overdosing on gigs - lol.

Cool...I'd like to see him while he's still playing. A living legend, that guy.
O.D.ing on gigs: you're playing too many, or attending too many shows?
Actually, I'm not sure I could ever do either. It's almost like there's never enough. Presently, I am seeing more shows than I am playing but hopefully it will start balancing out.
Yes, a balance must be maintained...I spent last Saturday playing music almost all day long. And then trying to get that 7/8 feel down. A tad scary at first, but once you count it 1,2, 1,2, 1,2,3...it's almost easy.
Check it out:
About a minute and thirty seconds into this video, Badi Assad starts doing percussion with her mouth, while humming, and leaping around the fretboard...woah!
These little guys are pretty good...I'm not sure what to make of the unusual overdubs though... ???

speaking of drummers . . . one of my fav drummers is sitting on the couch here in my little living room. and he said . . IF someone like TRAV ever needed a drummer to drum in a band that TRAV was needing a drummer for . . .he'd be GLAD to do so! he would be glad to come out of retirement for just such a thing.
hhhmmm . . . i wonder who that drummer would be?
and . . i wonder if he'd be so willing because we just finished watching ROCKY BALBOA!!
:waving: (hi TRAV!! says mavrik's mom and dad!)
I drum on a white set of pearles. I've been drumming for my church for over 2 years. :clap2:. I LOVE DRUMMIN FOR JESUS. He gave me the ability not any human teacher.
here's a fun little drum video for youse guys. a friend from work donated some of her husband's drum stuff to this organization after he passed away. apparently, the guy in the middle of the group founded this project. all of the drummers are from various homeless shelters or teen intervention programs. the drum equipment is donated to the kids and the instructors from various walks teach them to work together. pretty cool thing, if you ask me!
have any of you seen these guys before?

The Psalters?
Madison Green?
I'm not sure who they may have been playing with at the time.
What's that on her arm? It looks like scars in the shape of military patches..
Yes, that is Madison Greene. I remember the dreads guy.
Ok...I don't know Madison Green, but it sounded confusable with Fern Gully. :laughhard:
When I saw them, they were with The Psalters. :thumbsup2:
That pic reminds me of some of my family renunions. :great: :great:
so it seems that all of Minnesota is populated by drummers . . . or is it just that i keep meeting them?
someone at a bookstore, someone that i work with, a guy at the grocery store who was OBVIOUSLY a drummer . . and now my next-door-neighbor . ..
hhhhmmmm . . . interesting.
are drummers uniting EVERYWHERE!!!?????!!!!

Actually, cymbals are mentioned but I don't recall drums being mentioned at all in the Bible regarding worship to God. :sadbounce:
unfortunately. but hey we use it to praise God. So basically anything that makes noise lol to glorify God
this guy makes me want to put down my sticks, puke , and retire
THIS GUY IS SICK AWESOME
i want to play like this dude
http://www.youtube.com/v/SZqwvjwqwK4
this kid too
man theres some sick drummers out there
THIS KID ROLLS WITH ONE HAND AS FAST AS YOU WOULD WITH 2 hands and he twirls the stick with one hand and rolls with the other

Please don't puke and retire Robby. It's just not a good way to go. I have been listening to guys way better than me for years and they have never ceased to inspire me. Rarely do I ever try to play along to or directly copy any amazing drummer. Instead, I sit there and absorb the attitude, the fluidity and the essence of the style - like how it makes me feel. Then I take my inspirations and apply them to my own situation.
Remember, always be inspired rather than intimidated. Peace.
Here's to many many drumming years ahead!!! Can't wait to hear you in a few more years, Rob! Just don't take my gigs from me! :thumbsup2:
i know i am joking, but I'm not intimidated. My problem is that im constricted to a 5 piece (1 bass, 3 toms and a snare) along with 2 crashes and a ride cymbal without a double bass pedal also. But i need to practice a lot more too.
I am inspired by these 2 drummers, their amazing and just makes me convicted of not really practicing.
:thumbsup2:
Oh, man. You're only confined by your imagination and passion! I been playin' rock gigs with a 4-piece kit for years (2 crashes and a ride - snare, bass, one tom and a floor tom). You can rock out that way and still still see the crowd cheering for ya!

Here is a new video we made last night (with me on drums of course)

That is so cool they let Uncle Bobo and Uncle Hayseed out to jam with you guys
:waving: send my love and tell uncle hayseed he's still my favorite!
(I can't believe ya'll found that song after so many years to finally give it a name and release it!!)
Phil? Is your name really Frank Beard?
Nope
I'm a little bit to young to have been playing in the 60s and 70s LOL
BTW do you think that "Uncle Phil and the Holy Trinity" would be a good name for the group???

I was at the funeral of a great friend recently and came across another friend who is the brother of another friend whom I haven't talked for some time. He reminded me that this thread was still around. I wanna say "Hey!" to the Taye Drummer Man - a friend worth having for sure.
Peace.

of course taye would be there.
wow.

I just heard that Larry Norman died. :-(
So, why should the devil have all the good music?
Jack Yonts, Jr.
A visionary, a trendsetter, a drummer, a sax player, a compassionate man of God. We will always remember and always smile because of it.
Peace.
