Title: Men's suits
Post by: Envelope on September 28, 2006, 07:37:57 PM
I need some help ladies (and gentlemen.......).

What type of men's suits do you or your husband wear?  I'm looking for something with good quality but not with a super hefty price tag.  My dad was never much one for buying name brand, so it's useless to ask him.

My husband is 53, so he really doesn't want something that looks great on a teenager (if you know what I mean).  Nor is he interested in the "zoot suit" look......

Since we have been married, he has only had 2 suits.  One of them he gave away (to someone who needed it worse than he did) and the other he can't wear anymore (a little snug)......  Normally, to church or meetings, he wears dockers pants, with a button down shirt and tie.  Now that he's the police chief (at least temporarily, hopefully permanently).....he is wanting to spiff up his wardrobe a little bit.  I told him to consider dressing how the sheriff dresses.  I don't think I have ever seen the sheriff wearing Jeans (he is usually in slacks and a nice pullover shirt, or button down shirt).  I think that my hubby should look nice at all times and only wear jeans for such activity as working in the yard, or doing tasks that he would not want to wear dress pants for.

anyway, was just wanting some other thoughts, ideas and opinions.....thank you...

     Sharon

Oh man... Josh LOVES his suits... he buys them all from either Ebay or Value City.  Being tall, Josh likes the 4 button suits but will wear 3 buttons if necessary.  Here is a pic of him in his favorite suit.  He got it from Value City.  It was regularly $89 or $99 I think and he got 2 suits for $100.

Being older, I wouldn't suggest your husband wearing the plaid shirt with the striped suit but the striped suit with a plain shirt would be handsome and classy.  Josh is only 25 so he still dresses pretty trendy.

Check the sales racks at your local department store (Dillard's, Macy's, whatever you have where you live).  We buy hubby's suits at Men's Wearhouse.  He also likes a very classic style suit.  And, he is very broad in the shoulders, so he can't buy suits off the rack at a normal dept. store.  Men's Wearhouse is great because they have extended sizes and they do all the tailoring in-store.  They will also do any future alterations on the suit for free, no matter how long you have it.

also, honestly, look in your goodwill/thrift store.  Some people give away some REALLY nice suits.  And it might only cost you 10 bucks.  Now they are not always nice, but I have found some great deals there.

Ok... here's another pic of Josh in a suit... this one is just black but it's nice.  Again, probably avoid the bright tie... LOL

LOL.... My dear hubby loves ties.......but definately HATES loud ties, especially the ones that look like "drapery material" as he calls it.....

I will definately take him to Kansas city (closest shopping....) to check out men's wearhouse.

I have looked on ebay and there really are some very classy looking suits for reasonable price.......

Jolene Heather, that's where 1 of my husband's nicest suits came from (my pastor's wife got it for $2.)  That is the suit he gave away.....

I think I'll look at the consignment store here (I hadn't really thought about it....) LOL......funny when something is sooo obvious.....

Sharon

P.s......... Josh looks great in the "wild" ties!!

Those ties are actually pretty mild compared to some of his... LOL  He has SO many ties!!  I just asked him how many ties he has and he said "at least 60, probably more like 70"!!

I prefer a suite that doesn't require a tie. :)

Ok, I am a "big and tall" clothing guy. I have found the best selection for me to look nice on a modest budget is the J.C. Penney Big and Tall Man clothing. They have great mix and match selections. The best of their selections is from "The Stafford Collection".
If I have a few more bucks and want to feel like I am being served at a nice snooty New York tailor I go to Men's Warehouse. The clothing is a little more expensive, but very nice.
First choice, though, is the J.C. Penney Stafford Collection.

Josh is big and tall too and he has no problem finding suits to fit him at Value City and Burlington Coat Factory.

I looked up Value City and the closest one is more than 200 miles away... :smirk2:

BUT I'm going to have to get over to a BCFactory to see what they got.  It looks like they don't have much online to choose from.

Thanks girls!

same here MY.........value city is a longgggg way away......

another question?  is a 3 piece suit "in" or "out" these days??  Or is it just personal preference?  Just curious

Sharon

It's pretty much a personal preference.  I think of 3 piece suits as more formal or something.  Josh has one or two but he wears them without the vest more often than with.

My hubby gets so hot just in long sleeves, so wearing a vest is like for a winter day or something...lol

I get all my suits from K & G.  It sells name brand suits at lower prices...Alfred Nippon and Jones New York....Ralph Lauren...I've even seen Hugo Boss suits there for as low as $200...anyone who knows about Hugo Boss knows that that's unheard of.  You can usually find decent suits there for as low as $75.  It's a great place to buy suits...

Unfortunately, I checked to see if they have one in Kansas City, but the only one in Missouri is the one here in St. Louis.  The only one in Kansas is in Sawnee...not sure where that's at in relation to Kansas City.  Anyway, I highly recommend it.

http://www.kgmens.com/ (http://www.kgmens.com/)

There is also an outlet store in Cape Girardeau, MO called Thorngate that sells Hart Schaefner & Marx suits at incredibly low prices.  These are probably $500-$700 suits being sold for around $100...top notch suits...

http://www.thorngate.com/ (http://www.thorngate.com/)

Value City's pretty good, too, but the one in our area stinks.  They never have anything...

I also agree with JH.  You can occassionally find a good deal at Goodwill or the Salvation Army.  I know a kid from IBC that found a Hugo Boss suit at the Salvation Army for like $8.

thanks bishop, I'm going to check that out.  KC in itself is big but it's the suburbs that mesh into it that makes it seem bigger.  Shawnee is one of those suburbs on the KS side and something we are going to go check out.

There is this long low key debate going amongst my hubby and I as to when it's time to go to the next waiste size...lol  He's not fat by ANY means, not even chubby, but he is soooo reluctant to get up to that next size and just wear a belt.  He is convinced that a bigger size pants will fall off of him.  Right now it looks similiar to pinching a long balloon in the middle...lol

What do you guys say?

are there more choices than what's online for K&G?  My hubby's a 40/36 in pants.  Regular pants only go to 34L and Big and Tall start at 44W.  LOL... I should tell him it would be cheaper for him to get chubby....lol

He just needs TALL, not big.... this is fun though and those are some AWESOME prices!  Check those out Envelope!  That store is in a sub. that meshes right in with KC so actually it'll be easier to get to in order to avoid the dowtown KC.

Come to Hong Kong and you can get good quality tailor made suits really cheap!! That's what Berny does - because he's a funny shape... thick neck, broad shoulders but "short" arms and not as chubby as his neck size (if you know what I mean...) - it's awesome!! :D

Our friends just came to Hong Kong from Baton Rouge - their return airfares were about $700ish I think they said - and from my experience, that's pretty good!!! I don't know if that's just super special, or if that's "normal" though...

Mellow,

I've never shopped K & G online, but in the stores I know they have pant sizes that would fit your husband...suits that are 48L usually have a pant size that is about your husband's waist size.

Shopping in the store, they will "tailor" the suit to fit whatever your waist/length are.  It costs a little extra depending on what they do, but the pants are NEVER hemmed at the bottom, and you just tell them what kind of a hem you want, and they will do it for you.  I prefer all of my pants cuffed, so I pay them and they do it.  Of course, you ladies may know how to do that stuff at home, so you wouldn't have to spend the extra $10 or whatever it costs to have them do it for you.  I'm lazy, though, so I just have them do it.

The prices are terrific!  A Jones New York suit regular priced might cost $500...but at K & G it's usually about $150 to $180.  Alfred Nippon suits are usually a little bit cheaper, and they are made by the same people who make Jones New York...the feel of the suit is pretty much the same.

My friend Crystal and I bought her ex a suit at KandG one year for Christmas...  I think it was Hugo Boss... and he looked GREAT in it until he gained a ton of weight ... lol...

Not that I'm one to talk - but once you're outta the size, stop wearing it!!  Poor Mitch!!! :)

I couldnt believe we got a Hugo Boss suit for what we did - i think it was way less than 200 with shirt and ties and everything.... AMAZING!!!

I hate pants cuffs. I have mine taken to the tailor to have them removed.

As far as Hong Kong. I remember hearing a story when I was in the Navy as told by a friend of mine. It happened to a friend of his on another ship many years before.
In the Navy (and other branches), depending on your job, you can get quite a nice bonus if you re-up. Well, this one person re-upped and during the cruise the ship docked in Honk Kong. The sailors were given unlimited liberty (meaning, if they did not have duty watch, they didn't have to be on the ship). Well, this one guy disappeared for the entire time in port and arrived just before the ship headed out again. Before the ship headed out the captain wanted to hold a dress inspection. So, all the sailors are lined up in their best dress uniforms. The captain is walking down and inspecting each sailor. When he gets to the one who re-upped he suddenly stops. He looks and looks at the man's uniform. He keeps looking. Finally he reaches out and touches it. Just as soon as he touches it he pulls his hand back. He exclaims, "What is THAT!?"
The Sailor holds his perfect position and replies, "Cashmere, sir!".
He had an entire uniform made out of cashmere! From that point on he was the Captain's pet. Ha ha.

I think I found the answer to our problems.  I've been having some luck (or blessings?) on Ebay.

I got a sweater, and 2 sweater vests (Ralph Lauren & Guess) for under a dollar each, one being 25cents!  Then I found a pair of Donald Trumph brand black dress pants w/tags for $20!  My husband is thrilled.

It's like department store clothes for Goodwill prices!

Now if I could only get my computer to go to a Paypal site instead of sending money orders all the time..... :smirk2:

Hey ya'll....we went to K&G men's store today!!!  woooo hooooo

We got my hubby a new suit (with part of that 40 hour overtime pay) LOL  It is a nice medium gray suit with blue pinstripes (nice ones, not the zuit suit type ones) LOL......  We are getting it altered so I will pick it up tuesday.  I will take a pic of him and post it when we get it....

This leads me to another ???????   do you wear a plain colored shirt under a striped suit?  Or a striped or checkered shirt?  does it matter?  The ties we picked out are really cool too......I got 2 different ones for 2 different looks.....

Please help (again) LOL

Title: Re: Men's suits
Post by: nicolejoy on October 29, 2006, 03:58:32 AM
I think you can wear either under a striped suit - it depends on what "look" you want to go for, and probably also how obvious the stripes are... some you can't even tell from a distance that it's pinstriped... others are more obvious... I say you can wear whatever patterns you like - these days, people wear stuff that looks HORRENDOUS... so as long as it looks reasonable, you should be fine ;)

hahaha... I don't think Josh owns a suit that doesn't have pinstripes or windowpanes... And he wears ALL kinds of shirts.  Striped shirts are REALLY in right now.

I bought Josh 5 dress shirts for $39.95 last night online!!  He is SO excited.  He has a very thick neck and a hard time finding dress shirts.  We were at Walmart and Target last night and he made a comment that he wanted some new dress shirts and a fedora (LOL) so I told him we would go to Value City today and get him some.  We got home and I had an email from my mom about this special and I went and ordered him 5!!  LOL

Also, I was informed by my GQ brother yesterday that french cuffs/cuff links are really in this year too...
Title: Re: Men's suits
Post by: nicolejoy on October 30, 2006, 04:51:25 AM
My hubby has a thick neck too - but he's got short arms!! And he's not overly big. If he gets an off-the-rack shirt that fits his neck, it SWIMS around his arms/tummy... But if he gets it to fit him right around the body, he can't do up the neck!! So most of the time, he either gets shirts that don't really fit his neck, or he gets ones tailor made in Hong Kong pretty cheap...
Title: Re: Men's suits
Post by: Envelope on October 30, 2006, 12:37:54 PM
My hubby does not have a thick neck.  He is 6'1" and has long legs.  When we were trying on suits the other day, the man at the men's store was CONVINCED by looking at my husband that he needed a Long size suit jacket.  He found the same suit in the long section and brought it back for my husband to try it on.  My husband did it, but then the salesman was convinced that my hubby indeed needed a Regular fit!!  LOL

With ALL of my husband's shirts he does this 2 pleat thing in the back.  I can see why he does his uniform this way (it looks more tailored) and takes some of the bulkiness away from around the bullet proof vest.  I suppose it would make it a little tougher to be grabbed from the back of the shirt by a bad guy.  He also uses this method with his dress shirts, therefore they're not "poofy" around his belly or anything.  I have never seen any other men do this with their dress shirts......  Anyway I don't know if you can picture it in your head or not, but maybe sometime I'll take a picture.......

It's funny - I've got really long legs and a short little body, and my hubby has short legs and a long body... He's probably 4 or 5 inches taller than me, but our legs are the same length when we stand next to each other!!!

Sharon, I'm not 100% sure what you're talking about with the pleats... a lot of guys shirts have that "gather" spot on the back so that there's more room to move in it - do you mean that he creases those gathers (there's usually two in them) ALL the way to the bottom of the shirt, instead of kinda ironing them flat?? (does that make sense??)
Title: Re: Men's suits
Post by: *Christi* on October 30, 2006, 03:52:38 PM
I have no idea what you mean by pleating his shirt...

I am 5'10 and am just long all over and Josh is 6'3 and all torso.  We are 5-ish inches apart and I have a longer inseam than him!!  LOL
Title: Re: Men's suits
Post by: Envelope on October 30, 2006, 04:23:24 PM
I was going to take a picture before he left for work, to describe it, but his new uniform shirts are made different!!  I looked and they are more like a custom fit......so I'll try to take a pic later....

Anyway, if you look at his back what you see is how a normal man's shirt fits at the top, but as you look toward the waistline, he creates a "pleat" on each side that tucks into the waistband of his pants....The next time he wears a button down shirt and slacks I will take a picture.....

I don't know if that's any more helpful, but it simply looks like a "tuck" or pleat on each side of his shirt towards the bottom where it tucks into his waistband......

2 more guides and this was the best we could find:

Rolled pleat
Rolled pleats create tubular pleats which run the length of the fabric from top to bottom. A piece of the fabric to be pleated is pinched and then rolled until it is flat against the rest of the fabric, forming a tube. A variation on the rolled pleat is the stacked pleat, which is rolled similarly and requires at least five inches of fabric per finished pleat. Both types of pleating create a bulky seam.

Does that sound right???

Ok.....here's the pics I promised.....my husband was a very willing volunteer!!!  What a sweetie!!  I'm trying to put them in order so you can see the progression of how he makes these "pleats"............

The first 3 are BEFORE he does anything....He just has his shirt tucked in regular style....

He creates a "tuck" on each side of his shirt towards the hemline......

after he's done....and tucks in waistband.....

close up of "pleat"

another close up
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d8/Kilbysharonjim/flowers-pleat011.jpg)

close up of the other side.......

both thumbs in......just for clarification....on where the pleats are.....

finished...........wooo hoooooo       see how the shirt seems less baggy in front?

Ready to go take on the day!!!

Phone rings.......it's the police dept.....of course!!!

Leaving with his nice black leather coat (my dad bought him last christmas)

I hope this clears up the matter a bit for ya'll...............

Thanks honey for being my willing model!!!

ok, this may seem like a dumb question, but why not just buy a smaller shirt?
Title: Re: Men's suits

LOL........sorry, it's just that when he buys a smaller shirt, it won't fit around the neck!  The same problem that crstrom's husband and nicolejoy's husbands have..........

Josh said he doesn't generally have that problem (because he has a tummy) but he moves around too much on the organ for those pleats to even stay unless he stitched them down... LOL

I can see it now.  You better patent that before it catches on Envelope!  I could so see that becoming stylish.

Why do people wear suits and dress clothing at the UPC???  I have heard a pastor tell the congregation from the pulpit that because he did not have a tie on that night it was not because he was backslidden.  I have dress clothes and 1 suite.  I think it is a standard and it helps keep people out.  I agree with it.  I really do not believe it has to do with giving Jesus our best or meeting royality.  I do it just to look nice.  We meet Jesus in our Pajammas and He is the same there as He is in the Church.

Thanks.

One more thing.  I have ties.  But I do not like ties.  What are they for? To cover the buttons? Just a decoration?  So I prefer mandarin collars.  I heard on the T.V. program Cheers that the tie originated as a napkin.  I did not do any research on this to know if that is true.

I also think wearing dress clothing to church is good psycologically.  It gives us a reason to dress up.  Before attending the UPC I did not have a stich of dress cloths.  So I was a little uncomfortable with what I had to wear to church.

If anyone can think of me in prayer (my name is Paul) I quite attending the UPC two years ago this December.  The reason I left bothers me every day for the last two years.

Thanks.

IF you can find something called New York Fashions....then You find a great hip hop, zoot suit, walking suit, and conservative grandpa styles all in one building....  That's where I get some of my great choices and not so great choices....I got a couple suits for 50$ a piece that ended up making me look like a walking bedspread.

For years I shopped at thrift stores, however, in the city where I live, they've become attuned to name brands, and have raised the prices to where they are no longer a practical consideration.  I'd rather spend a bit more money and get something new than buy a garment worn by God knows who, that could cause incurable itching, etc...  :)

Try the Nordstrom Rack.  Look for tags marked "Previously Altered."  The last suit I bought was a Black Giorgio Armani with a normal price of $1795, which I purchased for $199.  And, because it had been previously altered, the suit fit perfectly.  Of course, praying before you walk into the store always helps...

I've always tucked my shirts in like that when I've worn oxford style shirts that need tucking...  cause I like everything symmetrical and fitted... smaller shirt doesn't work cause I'm a girl and smaller usually means smaller all over and then it stretches out too much in the wrong places... and those shirts are just built loose around the waist anyway

The place I like to shop for clothes the most is called Phase 2 http://www.phase2clothing.com/ .  They sell new clothing and used clothing.  But it is better quality then what you would find in a Salvation Army Thrift store. No one would ever know.  However, I ltell people because I like to see people get a deal.  A nice mandarin collar dress shirt would be about $12.  I've bought allot of clothing there.  If you choose then every purchase you make is recorded and when you reach $50.  you get a $5. credit. The next time you reach $50. they give you a $6. credit.  Then a $7, $8, $9, $10.  Then it goes back to $5.  I think I've been shopping there since 1998.  This place has been an immense blessing in my life.

We went to Mens Wearhouse last night and it is a bit $$ for me.   I don't know, is it really stewardly to buy a dress shirt for $60 that's eventually going to get armpit stained and tossed?  (I have yet figured out how to get those stains out!)

I don't think so Mellow... that's why I buy Josh's dress shirts either online or at Burlington or Value City.  I never pay more than $20 for a dress shirt and then it better have a nice tie with it!!

To help prevent the need for pleats..you can buy athletic fit dress shirts. That's what we do for my dad.  :thumbsup2:

Oh, and you can get good name brand dress shirts at tjmaxx, marshalls, ross...etc.

Wow, Josh is a sweaty hog... LOL And he has NEVER had an armpit stain... Is that weird?  I asked him and he said he's NEVER had one and he doesn't pre-treat or anything.  Is it the kind of deoderant or something maybe??
Title: Re: Men's suits

I've used various deodorants and I get stains with everything.   :smirk2:  My undershirts capture the brunt of it, but after a long time the outer shirt eventually picks it up too....

And I have never known there to be any hope for them after they get that way.  I just wear em till their too crummy or tear up.  lol

Since Clint has been working at the car lot he is super sweaty.   We have been trying to find him an antiperspirant to help but no luck so far
Title: Re: Men's suits

Antiperspirants don't do anything for me.....  The deordant aspect keeps it from stinkin', but the no sweat part is a joke.

This is  :offtopic: but...

I heard from a DR. on Oprah that it is true that people are attracted to eachother by their scent.  However, if you (meaning anyone) have a stench, then you're supposed to use antibacterial soap.  He said that stinkiness comes from 2 things... diet and bacteria.

anyway.... back to our regularly scheduled program.

I think it depends on the oils in your skin as to whether or not it stains
hyperhidrosis happens to a lot of people and your typical anti perspirants don't always help
I've actually found that some of the ones WITHOUT aluminum work better - wouldn't think so at first because the first treatments they give you for hyperhidrosis are prescription strength doses of...  aluminum! (which may have bad side effects in the long run)
Adidas has a new "cotton tech" that is aluminum free and I've found to work  - and I tried EVERYTHING from organic herbal freaky stuff to the prescription treatments

My husband keeps asking me now to "help" pick out his clothes.....When he wears his uniform I don't have to worry about it....LOL

IF you like the store, Men's warehouse....then you will love S&K    They have the same suits, and more selection (especially in color) and way cheaper....Quality may not be quite the same level, but still is very good. They also have an excellent selection of tie tacs, ties (wild and conservative), vests, formal wear, and casual wear as well...I know where I want to shop besides the store New York Fashons.

If you are anywhere near a Value City that is a great place to buy suits, shirts, ties, cufflinks, shoes, etc....

They have quality and they are very reasonable.
