I really enjoyed the Dee Henderson books.  They are Christian fiction with mystery and a touch of romance, but not mushy.

Danger in the Shadows
The Negotiator
The Guardian

There may be more.  I haven't read much lately.  I need to pick it up again now that I finally got some real glasses. ;)

Thanks, PF! I've been trying to remember who wrote these.... I read one a while back and loved it, but couldn't remember who wrote it to look for it.

I think there are like 7 in this series.... and I love them all! Dee Henderson does a very good job of researching and writing her books in relation to real life. She wrote one of them about a nurse... and it was quite accurate.

another series by a different author i cant remember at this moment? Sullivan? or was that the character in the book? lol!:

Healing Waters
Healing Stones
Healing Sands

Sands and stones were my favorite... water was hard to read for me, but made me think the most...

Haha... I had a feeling at least these two would for sure be in here...! LOL, One is a teacher... the other a professional book-worm...   :P

Books... books... too many books!

I love Gilbert Morris, and have read two of his books in the last 3 weeks. Yes, I skipped Alcorn to read Morris...  :P   Reading historical fiction set  in England centering about the time when William Tyndale began translating the Latin Bible into English was more interesting to me, than what appeared to be a mystery...! The two books (it is a set of three, but the third has not been released yet!) are part of the Winslow Breed Novel set... and predates his "House of Winslow" novels... and deals a lot with the Monarchs of England as well, and the many issues that took place.

Ohh, and as with most Morris novels, there is a some romance... and yes, make jokes if you like... But I enjoy a good romance!

Morris does an amazing job of taking me to the time and place he is writing of, and making me feel as though I actually know the characters I am reading about... as REAL people. Of course... I think I still might have an overactive imagination! LOL, Which is one of the reasons I avoid books that appear as thrillers / suspense filled novels!

I must say... I loved them... they are 300 pages each, and was a simple 3-4 hour read...  :)

Probably more books to rave and review on... but not tonight... Got another Morris book to start! LOL

 :P :P@ Yoop

this will probably come up at some point, so I may as well get it out of the way: Who has read books written by Jane Austen...I don't mean watched the film adaptations, (and I don't mean the zombie/vampire/sea monster adaptations) I mean actually read the books?

Despite working in a library, its sometimes hard to find a decent fiction book to read. I can definitely recommend Scott Westerfield as an author, albiet secular. My taste runs to the Sci/Fi...so unless you like that genre..my advice will probably not be altogether helpful.

I can also definitely recommend L.M. Montgomery, C.S. Lewis (of course), Lewis Carrol, L. Frank Baum, Louisa May Alcott, Laura Ingalls Wilder

I have yet to find others on board who enjoy books by Terry Pratchett

I second the Scott Westerfield recomendation. I LOVE his books. Uglies, Pretties, Specials, Extras.....really good "series".

I'm currently reading a book called 'The Know-It-All' by AJ Jacobs. It's about the authors quest to read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica. He also wrote 'A Year of Living Biblically' but I haven't read that one yet.

ok, I'm going to do it.  I want to order the first non-fiction book to read in about.. hmm.. 10 yrs.

All this talk about Alcorn.. Which one should I start with and may I assume they use discretion in the mysteries they solve?

The Alcorn books are amazing. I've read them all at least 4 times in the last 3 years. I think I'm ready to start back over and do it again. Lol

Start with DEADLINE.

Mel's right - The trilogy starts with Deadline. Then Dominion, then Deception. I also highly recommend his book Safely Home. It's about persecution in China, among other things. But you really can't go wrong with Alcorn. Everything he's written is fabulous - both fiction and non-fiction. And I don't just say that about authors I enjoy. ;-) You work in a christian bookstore as long as I did, and you get REALLY picky. *lol*

If you think you'll want to read the whole trilogy, sometimes you can get really good discounts for the boxed set from his website.

Figured I'd revive this thread- I bought a book the other day that I really enjoyed. It's a novel, "The Jesus Chronicals- John's Story" , by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. I normally don't care for their writings- they're the authors of the Left Behind series- simply because I didn't agree with much of anything written in their books. And yes, I know they were novels and meant to entertain, not minister, but I just felt like the information put out like that could lead unknowing people away. I'm not trying to anger anyone, just my opinion.

Anyway, I was at a local christian bookstore/cafe with Lou the other day and while waiting on the food I picked up the book- and couldn't put it down. I'm sure  that if I read it while holding the Bible in the other hand I'd find much to disagree with, but as entertainment it was terrific and showed some of what the apostles must've went through in the years after Jesus' crucifixion in a slightly different perspective than the Word.
Gotta be one of the better $5 purchases I've made in a bit.

Haha... Left Behind... I actually listened to all the dramatized ones, and read the final one... (simply because they never dramatized it, and I was too anxious to find out what Heaven was like... *snicker*), I enjoyed them simply as any other fictional story, and I liked the characters. But I am with you on this one as far as the actual accurateness of their writings... lol. *Enough Said*

I did read one other book by them, about a photographer... I really enjoyed that one, and it had nothing to do with end times... it was a great read.

Haven't read any other their other books, but I thought about it.

If you like a good western novel and want something with more of a christian perspective, I would suggest  The Saga of the Sierras series by Brock and Bodie Thoene. There are about seven or eight books in this series and you can actually get them all in two volumes. I got all of them on Amazon for about $8 including shipping. These books are just as good as any Louis L'Amour novel and much cleaner than some of them. They also wrote several other westerns that are very good as well.

I just started "Buried Alive" http://www.amazon.com/Buried-Alive-Startling-Untold-Neanderthal/dp/0890512388/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1301792162&sr=1-1 A Christian dentists viewpoint on the misrepresentations by the scientific world of the "Neanderthal man." I find it pretty interesting.

I was not super impressed with Randy Alcorn. I appreciated the story line. I appreciated his honesty in his humanity and probable fumbling of heavenly depictions, but I still don't like reading any author's interpretation of heaven. Even an author who admits he could never depict it correctly. I'd just rather read other things.
