Garage Computer

I now have a computer in my garage.  My wife's laptop was having some minor problems, her USB ports weren't working and one of the arrow keys had broken off, so I bought her a new laptop.  Since the old laptop still worked minus one key and USB ports, I decided to make it my garage computer.  I bought a PCMCIA USB/FireWire card so I could get some working USB ports, hooked up a Wireless Access Point (WAP) in the garage (the garage is too far away from my other WAP to get a good signal out there), and set up a spot on my workbench.  I now have a place to access my Chilton/Haynes CD manuals, hook up my AutoTap OBD II diagnostic tool/software, and research problems/fixes online right in my garage.  And, when I'm working, I can access my network share MP3 folder and have a large selection of tunes to listen to.  A computer is one of the best additions to my garage inventory I could get, and since I don't need anything high-end in the garage, a used laptop is the perfect way to go.

BTW, I now have 12 computers on my home network running a Server 2K3 AD domain.

I have that locked down pretty good.  I refuse to be  gateway for some creep in his car with a laptop surfing child porn.  It's just not going to happen on my network.

Here in Hong Kong, we have wireless - and so do a billion other people in the same building. When we were setting it up, we found TWELVE other networks we could have gotten onto. Ours has really tight security too - because we're soooo close to other apartments - we HAVE to have good security...
