I can't believe that Harry Reid (D-Nevada), the Senate Majority Leader, is this ignorant:

"Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all the Republicans can come up with is, 'slow down, stop everything, let's start over.' If you think you've heard these same excuses before, you're right... When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said 'slow down..." he said today (in, I assume, an attempt to shame Republicans for their opposition to his socialist health care bill).

Facts:
In the late 1850s, the Republican Party was born, with its principal mission, the abolition of slavery. They nominated Abraham Lincoln, who then won the 1860 presidential election (which in turn provoked southern secession and civil war over the South's "peculiar institution"). Democrats of the time were pro-slavery! After the war, southern Democrats sabotaged Reconstruction and extracted vengeance on the black freedmen in very cruel ways, and into the 20th-century fought desegregation tooth and nail.

Either he is embarrassingly stupid, or he is consciously playing the race card in the hopes that the African-American voter base won't recognize his glaring falsification of history. Makes me wonder whether today's high school history books make this point or not.
