Well I think it's official, I'm going to college again.
So I need to know who is good at Algebra. If you are I need your name, address, and phone number. I also need the name of your best friend, their phone number, your cell number, and the number of a third person who can come wake you up in the middle of the night if you don't answer my calls for much needed help.
:hypocrite: :hypocrite: :hypocrite: :hypocrite: :hypocrite:
j/k
I used to be really, really good at algebra - good enough to tutor other students.
That was almost fifteen years ago, but you're welcome to give me a try if you need some help. You may also want to check on whether your school has a tutoring center (like the one I worked at). They're enormously helpful, since you can sit down with a live person who can walk you through things, multiple times if necessary.
well I am going to have to repeat MAT-070 Introductory Algebra this quarter as I didnt catch on too good last
But thankfully it being a pre college level it does not count on my GPA
My answer is: NO! I'm not good at Algebra. ;)
I'm good, if I may say so myself ;) I'm not that out of practice either... although I'm sure I'm not AS good as I was when I was actually studying...
i am not, clearly.
BUT i will tell you that nicjoy has helped me through THREE math/science classes. she rocks!
by the way, nic, i got an A- in my genetics class! i know it was due in large part to your help. thank you so much!
I'm so glad it was so helpful for you!! I love math/science and if I could, I'd be an eternal student ;) I love studying. Yes, I'm weird I know ;)
i love studying, too, and would be an eternal student if i could be . . .maybe i will be hhhhmmm . . .but NOT in science/math. english/literature/writing that's my cup of tea!
I was great at it about 6 years ago.......now I could figure out 2x=10, but that's probably about all. lol
Well, I just got the official email. I start my first course Monday. Orientation starts tomorrow.
The next chapter begins. :)
I got A's and B's in Algebra and promptly forgot everything I learned.
I HATE multiplying, dividing and factoring polynomials

Can you say that last word in English? lol

CONGRATS!! that's awesome! you will enjoy school much more than you expect to. you will learn so much and become a better version of yourself.
and don't forget to ask for help here. nicjoy wasn't the only one who helped, she is just the one i remember by name. i actually ended up with a few tutors from here when i was doing my math class.
YOU CAN DO THIS!!

Heres an example of a polynomial we had to do in algebra, This stuff ALMOST drove me insane
8y
3 − 42y
2 + 72y + 378

In Australia, all that stuff is high school level maths rather than college... You can choose to take a lower level of maths, but you can't get really get into university without doing things like polynomials and calculus etc...

Where's the "equals" sign? It doesn't mean anything without one of those.
You can still use it to divide/multiply etc - you just can't "solve" it. It still means something.

Well, that's what I meant; you can't solve it.
And, one might argue, as long as it hasn't been solved the meaning is at best indeterminate. :D
But she was talking about multiplying, dividing and factorising polynomials so in that context, it does have "meaning" at least ;)

Don't you wish there was a way to make a living being a student? I've wondered if I should become a teacher (or a professor); at least I could spend my days in a classroom environment. Do you think loving being a student is an indication that someone would love teaching?
I think so - I want to get my dip ed but it got pushed back because of family/kids... I was actually doing my PhD (in Chemistry) but didn't like the research so much - I loved the teaching/tutoring side of it... if I had've gotten my PhD, I would have loved the lecturing and all that - and loved the conferences etc but not the lab work so much...
nope!!! :frustrated: ??? ;)
I'm a math major in an accelerated masters program. I also work as a math tutor, so if you ever want/need some help or advice just let me know. If you want to IM me, I'll send ya some other contact info if you're interested.
FOIL
I remember that much, I think it starts to come back once begin working with them once again, lol.
But I most likely will be in the same boat this fall or next spring.
I love taking classes, unfortunately, I enjoy taking classes that are not particularly related to any specific degree.
Astronomy, Anthropology, Volcano and Earthquakes, Photography... Got all the electives I will ever need, lol.
Taco: Once you ace that math, you can help me!

Geek, where have you been? Haven't seen you around here lately. *HUGS*
Been really ill. I'm in end stage renal failure, and between dialysis and surgery I haven't had much time for stuff.
Wow, that's terrible. Saying a prayer for you. *HUGS*
Well the first two classes are over and I currently have a 3.7 GPA. Could be better but I am happy with that for now.
 :clap2:YAAAAY. Tricia! Thanks for showing me this thread! LoL!
FUNDAMENTALS OF PROGRAMMING WITH ALGORITHMS AND LOGIC
BASIC MATHEMATICS
Start these classes on Monday. Got my finals in my current classes tomorrow and Saturday. These upcoming 2 will be easier then they sound I hope. lol
Taking the Basics in Mathematics class as a refresher before starting my back to back Algebra classes.
FUNDAMENTALS OF PROGRAMMING WITH ALGORITHMS AND LOGIC
It's the first week and this class is beginning to get to me. Pray that I can grasp this stuff.
Asked my programming professor a question, a very specific question I need help with.
His answer: Read slower.
He actually told me to read the textbook slower. After reading it and reading it and reading it, I somehow don't think reading it slower is going to help me much.
Maybe he didn't understand the question, but didn't want to admit he didn't understand it. Ask him if you should talk slower maybe?
Sorry... reflex. :laughhard:
I actually dropped the class until June then I will try again. The way it was setup I felt I was bound for failure. So I got a guy who already took the class who is going to help me prepare for it between now and then. This way maybe I will do better at it. Plus there is a similar class on youtube from MIT where all the classes are posted, so I am going to watch those. Maybe next time I will be able to conquer it.
I also can better focus on my Math class this way. I think my first assignment there suffered because I was so stressed out about the other class and not getting any help from the instructor.
The title of this thread now comes into play!!
well I'm around a bit more now and can help a bit if you need :)

Anyone know the update on CDAgeek?
He got married... has a son, and just had a birthday... seems to be doing ok? i dont know much more than that...
Wow!
I need help with this problem it is giving me fits: 2/r divided by 14/r. Divide and simplify. I keep getting the answer of 2 but when I check it I get an underlined 2 (which I can't remember what the underline is for) with one calculator and 1/7r^2 on the other. My brain is broken.
2/r divided by 14/r = 2/r TIMES r/14. Cross-multiply and there you have it.
By the way, a good way to check your answer is to substitute a number for the variable and see if it matches up. Doesn't matter what number, just so long as you get the same value for r as you would have in the original.
So to work the problem out:
2/r divided by 14/r = 2/r times r/14 = 2r/14r = 1/7.
Now to check... let's imagine r = 2, solely for simplicity's sake.
2 over 2 divided by 14 over 2 = 2 over 2 TIMES 2 over 14 = 4/28 = 1/7.
If you had an r in the result (if they had not canceled each other out) it would have worked just as well, solely for substituting to check.
