First, I'm looking for the verse were it says not to ask for  "signs".  Apparently, I can't remember it well; because none of my word searches pull it up.

I have questions on how this relates to us now...and/or our walk with God?

Aren't "signs" a part of direction? Direction as in; we should seek it?

Or is this passage speaking of. "signs" in a completely different context?

My questions are based on early childhood remembrance; I haven't heard a message with this content in quite some time.  If I knew the passage...I might know the answers.  Might! ;)

This might be what you had in mind:
A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. Matthew 16:4

Also:

And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation. Mark 8:12

Matthew Chapter 16

1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.

2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.

3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

Mark Chapter 8

1 In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,

2 I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat:

3 And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.

4 And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?

5 And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.

6 And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.

7 And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.

8 So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.

9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.

10 And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

11 And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.

12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

So are they seeking signs specifically that he is God? That he is powerful; and able to do wonders? Or both that he is God; and at what moment will the end come? In Matthew it mentions reading the signs of the times...end times? In Mark it seems that they are seeking signs he is God; and will work miracles?

I'm some what asking because after having decided that if something was God's will he would work things out in a certain sequence of events...which he did! However, in my mind and heart; being overwhelmed, poor of spirit, and insecure( life has been an amazingly hard, beautiful, and blessed journey this past year) I'm still recovering...so my insecure self talked myself out of things!

Having mentioned said events to another, I pondered the need for asking God for another guide...this person precedes to tell me that I am not supposed to ask for signs!

I'm not asking God to prove himself...I'm asking God for the wisdom, knowledge, and the understanding of what direction I should take! As well, the courage and confidence to walk said path!!!!

There are many places in the Bible where someone asked God for a sign "is this what I should do?"  Gideon for one.  And when God gave him the sign he asked for, dew on the grass but not on a cloth, he asked, "Okay, just to make sure you want me to stick my neck out here... could you do the opposite now, make the cloth wet with dew in the morning and the grass dry all around?"  I can imagine God sighing as He did this second sign, but He knows that sometimes we need to know without any doubt that this IS what He wants us to do.
"Do you sing at church?"
"Yes I sing at church, I sing at home, at work, in the car, at the supermarket, at Wal-Mart..."
:sing: :sing: :sing: :sing: :sing: :sing:
