Title: Camping
Post by: Melody on April 05, 2014, 03:17:41 AM
As soon as it ever warms up around here, we want to go camping. I know not many people seem to be into camping these days but I'm sharing things I think are cool concerning camping.

Which include survival stuff:

Like how to open a can w/o any tools.

Rocket Stove!

And of course my brain automatically cues up "I'm camping, I'm camping, in Canaan's happy land."

We'd like to do some camping ourselves, but our schedules usually keep that from happening. That, and Lou thinks a/c is a must. I've threatened for years to buy a teardrop style or a canned ham style camper- look them up- to pull with Rusty, but the right deal has not arisen when I had the funds, so that hasn't happened- yet.

We have a tent for 8 and we have used 2 queen air mattresses for years but the mattresses have worn out and we have been thinking about cots. However, Andrew is too tall for them.  I may just get him another single mattress and Hannah a cot.

I am so  not a camping kind of girl. (Can I still call myself a girl, being 41? lol) Maybe if I was in an RV, but never in a tent.

Sounds like my wife. She loves the outdoor grilling, but the rest of it- if it ain't air conditioned and bug free, she has no desire to be there. :P
Chey and I would have zero issues in a tent, or even an air matress in Rusty 's ( our antique truck) bed..

I guess when you grow up living in the middle of the Hoosier National Forest, you don't think much about camping, cause that's just like being at home.  We never camped or any such like.

I like air conditioning when it's hot, and I like bathrooms close so travel trailers are my choice ;)

Personally I like to sleep in a place where there are no mosquitoes.  I'll pass on camping.  I get enough nature when I ride my bike down to the creek with my dog.

My idea of roughing it - is a Hotel room that does not have it's own Hot Tub and Stereo system!

If God meant for me to go camping, he would never have invented Best Western, Days Inn and Holiday Inn Express.

I think people think it makes them look cool to complain about camping. Lol. I also think people enjoy complaining about it much more than they actually dislike it. Who'da thought this thread would get so much negative attention?  Hahahaha

Fair enough. And I think camping is akin to self-flagellation. But as long as you're out there, catch a few fish for me willya?

Our biggest challenge is finding a place to camp that is family friendly.  A place that isn't packed nor full of partying idiots.

This is not my setup. Right now I only currently have my hammock. I'm still debating which fly to get for coverage but my setup will be close to this when I purchase my fly, underbelly, bug net, etc.

Public camping areas across the country are currently the number one location to find illegally grown marijuana along with national forest. Hmmm.... look who our happy camper is.  :laughhard: :hypocrite: :laughhard: :hypocrite:

Ah, so THAT'S what "happy camper" really means.

Actually that was pretty clever.  Three points for Taco.

Sure you have.  Bro. Bobby and I have both used it multiple times in sharing threads.  In Bobby's case it's usually referring to him hating mornings, "I am not a happy camper today" or some such.

No, the weed growing at state parks, part.

It's going to get to 72* today!!!  Now if it can just stop dipping below freezing at night, I could plan some camping.

Ok so... Speaking of camping, my cousins Donna and Jessica left the house Thursday and headed with some other family members to go camping. Kendall, Aaron and I couldn't go cause we all had to work.

Thursday night after I got off work, I was gonna make the guys and myself some chilli dogs for supper. Since it was late, I just planned an easy dinner. So I'm boiling the dogs and I go to open the can of chilli sauce and what? No can opener. I realized that Donna took it with her camping. :smirk2:

Luckily I had just read this thread that morning so I knew how to open a can without one, well, at least that's what I thought after watching that video Melodya posted. So I went outside and tried it in the concrete steps. NOTHING.

LIES, LIES I tell ya. All it did was make a lot of noise and give the neighbors dog, Satin, something (else) to bark at.

Glad it wasn't a life or death hunger and all we had were can goods.

We ate plain hotdogs. Boo. :(

Moral of the story: TRY these things that you see on the internet, BEFORE you get stuck in the woods with nothing to eat.

Could've done like one of the old timer's that my grandma tells about....they were out working I forget what they were doing exactly, but for lunch, Clonia, or whoever it was, I can't remember, had brought a can of pork & beans to eat, but she didn't have a can opener.  So she whacked it with the chopping axe, and beans went everywhere.

There ya go.

I've opened a can with a pocket knife.  Not very good for the blade but I was hungry.

I'm making Andrew do it right now to a can of tomatoes....

Andrew scraped against the sidewalk for 30 seconds.

I used a butter knife to pry the rest of it.

So, it worked for us. Our side walk had some texture to it so maybe that's why.

I want to go camping this summer badly.  Especially since I'm living so close to Yosemite now.  I probably won't make it due to our crazy schedule, but it would be nice.

Losing Windows XP support really did the poor old gal in.
